2022 Square Route Rally - June 3-5, 2022

Pre-Registration is Closed! Late Registration at the rally.

The 47 Annual Square Route Rally is at the YMCA Camp West Mar in central Maryland's Catoctin Mountains. Yes, it's the 47th year but we had to skip 2020. It's an ideal rally site, boasting bunkhouses for those who don’t wish to camp, acres of camping on comfortable grass fields or under a mature tree canopy, a large dining hall, a large, open pavilion loaded with picnic tables that serves as Beer Haus & Seminar Central, and of course large spacious bathrooms & shower houses.

Please note that Maryland's governor and the property owners will make the rules for a safe rally in these infectious times. Currently, there are no restrictions! If things can change, BMWBMW will email updates.

Three days and two nights of excellent rides in the Catoctin Mountains with Washington, D.C. and historic Sharpsburg, Harper's Ferry, and Gettysburg are within an hour's ride away.

Rally mug to the first 200 pre-registered. Preregistration saves money and is the only way to reserve a bed in the bunkhouse. It also awards you with an extra ticket for both the door prize and grand prize drawings! Hurry and pre-register now as the pre-registration window closes on May 25th.

Delicious barbeque from Bolligers retaurant

Food

On Friday night, the inimitable Drew Alexander will make his delicious chili. A vegetarian option is available if specified when you register below. Saturday night's BBQ dinner will be catered by Bollinger's Family Restaurant of Thurmont, MD. Famous for Uncle Dirty's barbeque sauce, they have satiated rally hunger for a couple of years now. We are thrilled to have them return. Last year, they had beef brisket, pulled pork, and chicken barbeque. Their sides were coleslaw, beans, mac and cheese, and cornbread.

On Saturday and Sunday mornings, we will provide light breakfast fare such as Danish, fruit, and yogurt.

We do not include lunch but there are a variety of eateries in the area.

Tiki Bar

Tiki Beer Garden
Are you too sophisticated to hang out around a campfire? We have beverages available on-site at the infamous Tiki Garden Bar. Beer and wine will be available. There will be music serenading the revelers and suave bartenders serving libations and snacks. We have luxuriously comfortable picnic tables to lounge on. The open-air Tiki is popular with cigar aficionados. Everybody else takes their drink and wanders to the campfire where the smoke is slightly less pungent. Speaking of the campfire, we will provide all the logs you can incinerate around a large stone ring. Bring your chocolate and marshmallows.

Accommodations

Wooded, open and quiet camping areas are included in your rally fee. There is shade along the forest's edge and soft grass in the meadow. Four-wheeled campers are welcome, but they must be parked on the roadway or parking areas. It's okay to park on the side of the road and have your awning set up over the grass. Please talk to the rally registration volunteers as soon as you arrive.
For an extra cost, bunks in the bunkhouse are available on first-come, first-serve basis. Register early!
Motels are available in nearby Thurmont.

Speakers and Seminars: Featured Speaker Wendy Naessens

Wendy Naessens is a professional rider, BMW U.S. Riders academy Instructor in training, and an unofficial ambassador to the BDR & BMW MOA organizations. For the last Thirteen years, Wendy has enjoyed long distance touring, work commutes, track days, flat track, ice and trail riding, as well as extensive on-road and off-road training across the country.
Growing up, Wendy’s dad had a Honda motorcycle which she loved going for a cruise on. “you meet the nicest people on a Honda!” In 2009, Wendy began her own journey with motorcycles in the beautiful city of Chicago. There she was able to master clutch control in the stop-and-go traffic of the city. She quickly transitioned to long distance riding and attended as many advanced riders courses as she could. That’s how she found the dirt which set her riding career to all new heights! during the pandemic lockdown Wendy’s day-job went remote which allowed her to move south in search of twisty roads and better weather.
She is passionate about educating and helping other motorcyclists become the absolute best riders they can be and hopes to empower men and women to become more independent riders. Wendy was also in the Wyoming Backcountry Discovery Route movie and will tell us what that was like. The Wyoming Backcountry Discovery Route is a multi-day off-pavement ride for dual-sport and adventure motorcycles through the most dramatic and rugged landscapes in Wyoming. Beginning in Baggs, WY, the route traces the mountain ranges to the east through the Sierra Madre and Medicine Bow Ranges, crosses west to the Wind River Range, then goes back east and north through the Bighorn Mountains, eventually ending at a remote Wyoming-Montana border. Almost every section includes some moderately technical riding, as the remote two-track flows through regions of vast high-desert, short-grass prairies, and alpine climates. You will experience expansive views from the summit of two different 11,000-foot mountains, cross two major rim escarpments and pass through many other seldom visited areas and historic mining towns. This is the most remote BDR, so plan ahead and be prepared to have a true backcountry adventure.

Speakers and Seminars: What’s in your toolkit round table

Fraser will lead a discussion about what you carry in your travel kit and what you could do with it. If you carry nothing but a cell phone and a credit card or if you carry enough tools to replace the U-joint, join us for a lively debate about who's right, discussion about the benefits of certain tools and what you can do to get back on the road after a breakdown.

Speakers and Seminars: How do I get a GPX file in my GPS?

Bruce will show you how to get a GPX file from a website or email loaded into your Garmin or BMW Motorrad Connect app. It's not as hard as you think and can often be done with less 6 cuss words or less.

Antietam Battlefield Guide Tour

The Saturday guided tour to the Antietam Battlefield is extra cost because we will hire a professional battlefield guide. The National Park Service vetted and certified these pros for their knowledge of history and ability to communicate. For a modest fee of $17, you will join our group led by an expert in history and storytelling. You will learn what happened, why it happened, and who the poor souls were who suffered through it. Heavy rain may cancel this tour. If that happens, we will refund the fee.

Performance Tee Shirts

2022 Rally Tee Tee-Shirt has a small club logo on front and a large rally logo on back
The "performance fabric" tee-shirts were so popular in the past that we are again using 4 oz., 100% micro-polyester, moisture-wicking, UPF 30+ protection material for this year's rally tee-shirt. This is a picture of last year's shirt. We are working on the design for this year's shirt. Come back to this page for updates. After you register, you can return to the registration page and just order a shirt without paying another rally fee.

June 3rd - June 5th, 2022

The roads are perfect for summer riding as they wind along streams and through forested hills – we’re a stone throw from part of the BDR (MA BDR section 3). You also have a choice of wide sweepers through Pennsylvania's Michaux State Forest, tight two-lane along the C&O Canal, or GS trails for your Beemer to explore. But if you stumble upon the gate into Camp David, make a quick U-Turn. Civil War buffs have a multitude of choices including Gettysburg, Sharpsburg (Antietam), South Mountain, the C&O Canal and Harper's Ferry. For those interested in Arts & Shopping both Gettysburg and Shepherdstown boast many galleries, shops and sidewalk cafes in restored downtown.
