Pro or Con for using gas treatments?

Postby hollywood » Tue Mar 23, 2004 9:01 am

 OK, I have never used gas additives to any of my motorcycles before. However, my new R12CL with a Bosch Motronic MA 2.4 fuel induction requiring premium fuel has me wondering about the use of fuel treatments. Does anyone have a pro or con for using gas treatments with my BMW :?: Is it even necessary :?: Thanks!

I used to dump in a half a bottle of Chevron Techroline into my K1100RS in the tank prior to doing an oil change. With engines designed to go 250,000+ miles I figured it couldn't hurt.

I wouldn't put anything not recommended by BMW. Trace elements in the additive could affect the O2 sensor, which is the reason --I've read-- you need to use oils approved for motorcycles with fuel injection systems if you have FI and O2 sensors. But I'm no technical expert...

Thanks for the replies. I guess I won’t add anything, but wanted to check. As for maintenance in general, I am not the kind to do it myself, too much like work. So, the techs working on the bike will notice or recommend whatever is best I guess.

I asked the same question to the tech guys at Bob's....

I friend of mine who owns a Jap bike (not that there is anything wrong with that!) told me to drop a 1/3 of bottle of fuel additive/fuel injector cleaner into the tank.

I asked a tech at Bob's... he said it was a big no-no and wouldn't recommend it whether it was an oil or an air head.....

So... i sided with the BMW repair guys.... they said just use PREMIUM gas and that should be sufficient to keep the fuel injectors clean...

I also changed the spark plugs and checked for unusual wear.... that helped it run better....

I always go with the techs, they know much more than I do! This and I always listen to others experiences as well, so thanks for the input!
