BMW Cover Pants (and other pants)

Postby R4R&R » Sat Sep 27, 2008 12:22 am

I used to have an old pair of Firstgear HT Overpants, the first generation before they offered a removeable liner. After almost 100,000 miles they kind of got worn out which was understandable. I was looking for some overpants which could easily be slipped on over work clothes, so they had to be waterproof and decent for winter.

I wanted to look at other brands since I wanted to actually try them on. This left me to local dealers, and nobody seems to stock Firstgear. I went to Morton's to see what I could get. I was interested in the Olympia Scout pants but I didn't like the way they fit me, so I moved on to the TourMaster Venture pants. They fit better and said they were waterproof. I liked the fit although the zippers seemed to frequently get caught in the material, making it difficult to get on/off. The real problem revealed itself when I encountered my first rain - they leaked - bad. :( I called and they offered credit or an exchange. I liked the pants so I tried the exchange. The second pair leaked just as bad. I think they missed when they stated them as 'waterproof'. I did notice the zippers on the second pair didn't seem to get caught as often - an improvement. I eventually took them back to look more at the Olympia pants again. I still didn't like the fit and was turned onto the BMW Cover Pants. Well, I encountered my first good rain last week and they held up great - no leaks what so ever. Sure they cost more, but I think in the long run it's worth it.

BMW does make nice gear, but it is expensive. I think these pants are worth the price ($300). Now I need to look at jackets and I'm seriously considering the BMW Tourance 2 jacket. :D

BMW clothing is very expensive. There are some Firstgear waterproof jacket pants available on eBay. I found a discontinued Firstgear 3/4 jacket )$145) and a used and one-size-up BMW overpants ($135) which are both waterproof in a good amount of rain and riding at 65 mph. Actually I removed the extra liner for warmth and wear a Gerbing liner when it gets cold, and I got overpants which are one to two sizes larger for easier slip on/off. I was also ready to get the pants tailored a bit if needed. The savings allowed me to buy the full Gerbing set. Good luck.
