where will you ride in 2010?

Postby griffin738 » Fri Dec 11, 2009 12:04 am

Hey gang, I've been thinking quite a bit about what I want to do on two wheels in 2010. A leading option at this point is to take my itty-bitty dirt bike on a long ride to the west coast (yep, the TAT is heavily involved). That is a stretch goal for me in 2010, but I put it forward as my most favored plausible ride for the year.

So what about the rest of us? What do you all want to do with/on your bikes next year? Let's post a time capsule here and then we can re-visit in 12 months and see how things worked out.

I'll start by posting a photo of the bike I plan to get dirty in 2010. . .

I'm planning a loop home - Atlanta - New Orleans - Dallas - Nashville - home. The high school I went to in Belgium is having a reunion in Dallas some time this summer. Not sure when it'll happen, but I plan on going, taking the bike, and visiting some old friends along the way.

I would just like to have a ride to ride on rides in 2010.

But, if I do have a ride to ride on rides in 2010, then I would like to ride on ride on the IBA's 48 Plus.

tentative plan to go to Sedona possibly, maybe, perhaps, if I can swing 3 weeks off in a row and still take two more one week vacations. Ride to SC this summer for a week with Jeanne to a time share we have down there. Various east coast weekend outings to my fav. rallies and such. plus all the regular stuff. Like to do a few weekend camping trips to some of the more primitive camping spots (i.e. no running water or facilities) I passed this past year that sit along some quiet rivers 'n such.
No LBR's or IBM's for this guy thou... I'll leave that to the more motivated and farklized riders out there...

okay, okay. . . looks like we've got a decent start. i'm glad that chiba's route presents a nearly perfect trapezoid and that kermit is already off the map (or at least the map i have handy).

doghouse, if you look really, really, REALLY close then you'll see that i've traced your route back and forth to work a bunch (yes, of course i might be lying )

and here's to everyone having a ride to ride where they want to ride at some point when they want to ride to a place on that ride

i've done my (casual) best to represent our plans to date on the map below. gimme more and i'll make more.

I plan on riding parts of the Underground Railroad all the way up into Canada. I already started this year by riding to different sites here in MD. I have a couple sites to revisit. So far, it's been a journey and I discovered that I've been past most of the sites I went to and didn't even know I was already on parts of the routes towards freedom that escaping slaves had made. I also hope to ride out to CO and maybe Nova Scotia to visit friends. I'm thinking about taking that ferry from NS to NY on my way back home. 2010 looks to be fun and a total journey of discovery for me.

I am thinking of doing the Iron Butt "Changing of the Seasons" ride. It will take four individual saddle sore rides one on each of the season change date (the approximate dates of March 21, June 21, Sept 21 and Dec 21). I initially thought about going in each of the different directions North, South, East and West, then reality hit, going east will be a little difficult to get from here  I still want to do this as a ride for the coming year.

I may be heading that way myself. I've been to Newfoundland four times (so if anyone wants any advice...) and Labrador once, but I've been wanting to go back once the Trans-Labrador is finished. It opened to the public on December 16, so now you can drive all the way across Labrador without using the ferry, which is what I've been waiting for. I've already ordered tourist info (http://www.newfoundlandlabrador.com/) and, assuming I do this, the idea is to ride all the way from here to Quebec, overland to and across Labrador, then the short ferry to Newfoundland and head home from there.

For those heading to The Rock -- the local nickname for the island of Newfoundland -- might I suggest L'Anse aux Meadows (the Viking settlement); Gros Morne (beautiful national park on the way to L'Anse aux Meadows); whale watching out of Trinity Bay; the capital city of St. John's; and the southern Avalon Peninsula. The last time I was in Newfoundland was in 2003, and I had the thrill of riding a Zodiac out into the north Atlantic to see whales and icebergs up close (here's the place I used and recommend: http://www.oceancontact.com/html_index.html) , and riding up to a herd of caribou migrating across the Avalon. Just awesome experiences.

Some caribou about 100 meters away:

I had only a small pocket digital camera with me on that trip; I won't make that mistake again.
