R1200C Refurb

Postby JimVonBaden » Wed Oct 21, 2020 10:29 am

My friend Mike purchased a nice, but rough R1200C over the weekend. We picked it up in NJ from a guy who was riding it, but had the clutch stop working. He replaced the slave, but no help.

Here is the pick-up:

Nice bike, runs OK on 8 month old gas.

This is the plan:
The right side of the tank has some small dents, but the paint got the brake fluid treatment and it would be seriously difficult to fix. Besides, Mike likes what he likes! :-)

This is the scheme, change blue to green:

Overall in decent shape. The swingarm will need to be repainted after surface rust removal. A little polish, some small chrome rust removal, and it would look pretty decent as is.

Of course all the usual stuff will be done, SS brake lines, spline lube, fluids and filters, plugs, tires (from 2002), brakes, etc.

Got the clutch working last night. Turns out it was rusted frozen to the flywheel. We pulled the starter, removed the cover bolts and pried the pressure plate back, then freed up the clutch plate. I took it around the driveway and it works normally. Here is a video of Mike starting and moving it.

Then we tore it down.

Someone on ADVRider said they saw an R1200C painted just like this in the MOA Mag a while back. Anyone remember this, and have a link?

Stay tuned.

Jim,

Hot dog, another fix-up series from the King o' Projects!

This bike looks like it was left out in the rain a few too many times, but I know you'll make it as good as new in short order. Keep the pictures coming!

Thanks Rick. This is one bike I wish I had seen first!

The Hall Sensor was a mess. Sure to fail very soon!

We did one at Morton's BMW for a customer years ago, and it ended up on the cover of the Owners News. We had it painted like an R90S in Daytona Orange -- beautiful paint scheme!

Yup:

Very close, and a Morton's bike like I suspected, but not the same paint.

This is Mike's bike:

See the paint difference?

Did you only do one?

Bunch of stuff on Mike's R1200C.
Valves, SS brake lines, clean and lube calipers, clean wheels, remove Swingarm, sand and paint it, spline lube and install. Clean and lube the clutch slave. Touch up rusty frame parts, polish the frame and Telelever. Tons of cleaning and degreasing!

The oil looks like it had some water in it when we did the valves. The gaskets were firmly stuck too.

We spent a solid 9 hours on it.

What kind of trailer is that?
Looks like the bike spent a fair amount of time in the rain per the rust on all the bolts, etc.

I like that lady in the first photo....she's like "this thing has GOT to go...."

The trailer is a generic Chinese 4x6 trailer that I modified the front to catch bike tires and make it deep enough to put a full sized bike in. You may remember me picking up Tina's bike with it.
Image

The bike sat for at least a year in a semi-open barn, so yeah, a fair bit of surface rust.

She was saying exactly that! :-)

Cool on the trailer. I've been renting the one from uhaul, which is very stout and heavy, but a trailer like that I could move easily where I keep my car trailer. :)

LONG day of work on Mike's R1200C. Wiring all wrapped, brakes connected and flusched, tires changed, all fluids changed (with a serious oil filter issue, fenders attached, fuel quick disconnects added, intake boots replaced, bar risers added, new grips, backrest added, and a bunch of misc. Just waiting on the HES to get to running.

Jim,

Looks great, as expected!

I'm glad you got the rusty brake bleeder screws free. I've had a complex about bleed screws ever since I broke all four of them off my 3-year-old 1968 Fiat 124 Sport Coupe back in 1971. I bought it used in Ohio, where they use a lot of salt in the winter. Never again! I finally sold it when the scissors jack went all the way up, but the car didn't lift even an eighth of an inch…

It lives!

Installed the HES, new belt, exhaust, fit the pump and filler in the tank, added gas, reattached all the connections, and it started right up.

Mike and I spent Sunday assembling and finishing all the details. There were a few issues. The fuel injector on the left side wasn't getting power, loose connector, and the right spark plug wire had a crack, so a short. Temp fix using self vulcanizing rubber tape, and it is purring. Fun stuff, adding the chrome racks and luggage, and Mike did a great job pin stripping the tank. Looks great!

Took a quick ride to test it, ran great!

Today we took a nice ride out to some back roads as a shake down/ Ran and rode great. About80 miles is all, but great day.

Then back home and load it up on the trailer:
