BMWBMW Square Route Rally
Burkettesville Wander Route by Ted Verrill
The Burkettesville Wander is a nice 78-mile loop crossing
the Maryland countryside and passing through Burkettesville, Harper's Ferry,
Shepherdstown, and Sharpsburg/Antietem Battlefield. Burkettesville, home of the infamous
"Blair Witch", is actually a well-preserved quaint, old Maryland town. Passing
west over a mountain ridge, Gapland Road leads to Rt. 67 south to Harper's Ferry (I highly
recommend a stop for ice cream in historic downtown!) West on 340 from Harper's Ferry is
another great countryside road, Rt. 230 Halltown Road which leads to historic
Shepherdstown's lively art and cafe scene. Rt. 34 north passes through the heart of the
Civil War's Maryland Campaign, don't miss a quick driving tour through Antietam!
Leave the Rally site and head north on Brown's Road to a
left onto Rt. 77.
At the bottom of the biiiig hill, after about 3.3 miles,
turn left onto Rt. 17 South.
Follow Rt. 17 (Wolfsville Rd.) south for a winding 17 miles
to a right turn in Burkettesville onto W. Main Street/Gapland Road.
Follow Gapland Road up and over the mountain for 2.3 miles
to a left turn on Rt. 67 South.
Follow Rt. 67 South for 5.3 miles to a right turn onto Rt.
Follow Rt. 340 6.4 miles - across the rivers, past Harper's
Ferry, to a right turn on Rt. 230 North, Halltown Road. Note: If you have time make sure to visit Harper's Ferry's historic downtown by
turning right just after the second big bridge, the one crossing over to West Virginia.
There are many small shops including great ice cream & BBQ!
Follow Rt. 230, Halltown Road 9.5 miles to historic
Shepherdstown where you will turn right onto Rt. 480 (which becomes Rt. 34 after you pass
into Maryland a few hundred yards away.)
Follow Rt. 480/Rt. 34 for 10.5 miles through Sharpsburg
& Antietam National Battlefield to a left turn on Rt. 40 in Boonsboro.
After only a half mile passing through Boonsboro on Rt. 40
turn right onto Rt. 66 North.
Follow Rt. 66 north for 10 miles to a right turn onto Rt.
After only 1.2 miles on Rt. 64 turn right onto Rt. 77 for
3.3 miles to a right on Brown's Road and the Rally site.
