Rear Brakes

Postby raysuf on Sat Sep 23, 2006 11:41 am

Dumb question. How do I remove the pin to free the brake pads from the caliper. I pulled the clip and can't seem to get the pin to come out. Do I need a bigger hammer?

The pin should just pop out. They can be fussy, but they don't screw or anything. C-clamp out.

Thanks. I was trying to tap it out while it was resting against the final drive and I guess it was being cushioned be the towel I had to protect the two from rubbing. I bolted the caliper back on the bike and taped on it. It came right out.

I not going to post a picture of the old pads because I'm too embarrassed. I wouldn't expect the rear brakes to be gone in 12000 miles. The front pads look fine.

Interesting, someone else posted about rear pads worn early recently. I wonder whether it has anything to do with linked braking?

I got 24K on the RT and those were fully linked. The GS the front brake is linked to the rear, but the rear pedal works just the rear.

I do tend to favor the rear. I ride in rush hour traffic and I drag the rear alot when moving slow. Those servo assisted front brakes grab too easily when moving slowly causing me to put a foot down.

I just got my RT inspected the other day. The machanic said my rear pads were almost worn out. I just replaced them about 5000 ago. I do a lot of stop and go rush hour traffic, but I would have thought they would have lasted longer.

I did not measure them, and the guy was not a BMW mechanic, so they may be normal. I did get the OEM pads, but never again if they wear out this fast.

So the front is linked to the back , but not the other way around, right (2003 R1150RT ABS)?

I'm not sure about your brakes I know they were playing around with alot of things the last few years of the 1150. I'm sure someone else can answer better.

5000 miles on brakes can't be right. I'd check them yourself if I was you.

I installed some EBCs last night, new to BMW 02 RT, found that the caliper pin on front (bracket/base) isnt freeing up as is the rear pin. Im not referring to the pin holding the pads but the guide pins for the caliper movement.
Question: Is it possiblt to disassemble the caliper and replace or clean/lube the pins?

Do NOT disassemble the caliper. There are unobtanium O-rings in there. That said, you do not need to. Use a pin punch and pop out the pin. Sand it smooth and then use some grease when reassembling it. That will help the pads move and wear more smoothly.

just driving by the forum again. thanks for replying.
I did get the caliper & carrier seperated, STUCK! together, corroded. Brakes work very well now, no binding, no hot rotor.
