R1100RS Project.

Another project, a 1994 R1100RS. I picked it up before Christmas.

Decided to shift directions since I can't take the Vespa parts out to get blasted and powder coated.

The R1100RS is in the garage and on the Kenda. Popped off the body panels and tank with 3 gallons of bad gas, popped in a good test battery, and it lights up and turns over with the unmistakable sound of at least some compression. This is a good indication that the 31K miles hasn't been too hard on it.

Overall the bike is pretty grungy, but actually in good shape:

The underside of the tank was as ugly as the top, but the pump looks OK.

I spot polished the bike to see if I can salvage the paint. Looks like it will come out good.

Now to order the usual service items. If it runs, then I will order tires and brake lines.

Swapped out the fuel filter and sock on my 1994 R1100RS. Kit from www.beemerboneyard.com .

Cleaned a ton of mold off the bottom of the tank:

Sanded the rim of the fuel plate to smooth off the corrosion, then used the BBY O-ring kit to install it in the tank.

Once all together I installed it and tried to start the bike. No go, no fuel at the injectors. I checked the pump and it was flowing at key turn-on, but nothing when cranking.

This is generally the HES, so off it came. Damn spiders are everywhere on this bike.
The pins were clean, and it all looks OK, but now I need to test it.

Wow, what a difference! I never would have believed it.

Looks like a fun project, and I'm pleased to see that you're rescuing (yet) another BMW motorcycle. Good luck!

I'm amazed that you did not have to paint the bike. I would not have guessed that could be polished out. Is the color impregnated in the plastic or a paint layer on the surface?

Cleaned and polished the turn signals and tail lights of my project R1100RS. Like the rest of the bike, they were nasty. Came out nice.

Finished polishing the rest of the bodywork. It looks really good in photos, but the tank is still a bit dull. It will go round two polish, then all will get two coats of wax.

Added some lift wheels to my Kenda lift so I could load the bike in the garage, then roll it into the workshop with the bike on it.

The lift wheels worked perfectly. Painted them, then rolled the RS onto it in the garage, then rolled it into the workshop. It even went over the beveled 1/2" lip. Created an oil catcher from a paint pan so I could pull the valve covers. Works great.

These are a particular bitch to get out. Hard to weld on a bolt, hard to drill.

Drilled and tapped a front fender hole:

Installed head guards with refreshed bolts, then cleaned header.

Cleaned the swingarm, final drive and some of the rear wheel.

Cleaned and polished the gauge cluster. Came out nice except the inside of the tach. Funny how the tach and speedo are not equally faded.

Lights work great!

Received the fork seals and dust seals. Nice for the price of $21.

Little by little it is coming together. Tires and SS brake lines on the way.

You sure put in a lot of work even before being sure it ran, no?

Where do you get these terrible condition bikes? Must have been cheap to be worth your while? (Of course I'm projecting my values on it.... :) )

I was messing around waiting for the HES to arrive, so yeah. Besides, if it wasn't any good, parting it would be better with clean and nice looking parts.

Yes, very cheap, $0.00. :lol:
