R1150RT/RTP Headlight Solenoid

Postby jcabiles » Sun Jul 14, 2013 2:21 pm

Any owners of an R1150 RT/RTP live near Vienna, VA. My headlights are not working and the blue High Beam indicator is on. Both Hi and Lo Beam bulbs are OK.

Would like to do a quick swap of the headlight solenoid to see if my solenoid has failed.

Thanks.

I have an appointment Tuesday to plug into the GS 911. I'll let you know if it's the solenoid.

Give the the color/part number anyway to see if what is in my spares box matches... Good luck on the GS 911 appointment.

The GS911 will be of no help for this.
You have a burned ground wire inside the headlight.
What are you calling a solenoid? BMW used relays on you bike. You may also have a Kisan Headlight modulator, they tend to cause trouble.

One other symptom I did not mention is that the blue hi beam indicator light was also flickering while riding. The flickering eventually stopped, and the high beam indicator stays on when headlight switch is turned on.

George, you are correct that OLDER Kisan modulators caused problems. But I don't think the newer ones do--though my newer one hasn't been installed as long as the older one was. How does one tell if it is a newer one or an older one? With the old ones, if I remember correctly, the burned-out-bulb-indicator would flash--so you had a visual that the modulator was working--it was nice. They have honed the newer ones and the burned-out-bulb-indicator doesn't light unless the bulb is actually burned out! I've had the newer model on my R12RT for nearly 18K miles and no problems so far! :D I miss the bulb indicator, though, since there's no way to tell that the modulator is on, except checking for reflectance in the environment! :(
