BMW to Design/Sell < 500cc Bikes in India

Postby PhilAger » Mon Apr 08, 2013 9:07 pm

Just saw this article about BMW Motorrad expanding development and production of smaller motorcycles in India in a partnership agreement with TVS Motor Company inked earlier today.

http://in.news.yahoo.com/bmw-tvs-motor-jointly-develop-sub-500cc-motorcycles-124552230--finance.html

"Chennai, April 8 (IANS) German automobile group BMW and India's two- and three-wheeler-maker TVS Motor Company will jointly develop sub-500cc motorcycles to be sold under
the respective company badges, said company officials.

'We will enter into below 500cc motorcycles Asian market. BMW and TVS Motor have signed a long term cooperation agreement,' Stephan Schaller, President, BMW Motorrad, told
reporters here."

I'm guessing we'll see some of these in the west in 2 or 3 years... Feel free to add your insider remarks now, Steve.

I'll see if I can find something out about this - first I've heard of it, but I've got some contacts I can reach out to :)

No surprise to me, Honda blazed the trail, H-D has already started down this slippery slope and "we" have sent them down the path. It happened to the garment industry, then the auto industry and now...Welcome to Wal-Mart World!

I'm told the bikes built in India are just for India, but I could imagine some further distribution in Asia. I have been specifically told these bikes will not be coming to America. That is not to say there won't be additional vehicles coming here that are smaller than the current 650 cc end of the line

And tell us about the BMW cruisers too

Thy were fine machines in their time, and many still enjoy them. How's that?

Me, too. I'm lucky enough to be able to say Hellman was a friend of mine and he was a tremendous factor in the world of BMW motorcycles. There isn't, and likely won't ever be, another like him.
