Shielding around wiring harness dry rotted

Postby timtimtim2000 on Mon Mar 26, 2012 6:38 pm

The shielding that protects my wiring harness is dry rotted, especially around my handlebars.

As you can see in the picture, black shielding is cracked. Parts of it are missing.

This closer up view shows that the individual wires are not damaged, but will be soon if I don't fix this soon.

How do I fix this?

I'd prefer not to use regular black electrical tape, as the adhesive could be problematic later. I do have some self fusing silicone rubber tape (AKA Rescue tape) in my garage. Does anyone have any suggestions?

This is my 2001 R1150GS, if that matters.

the rescue tape should do well and won't be a gooey mess if it needs to be removed. I'd recommend you undo the zip ties on either side of the affected area and tape the affected area and to either side of the zip ties and then put it back together (without overtightening the zip ties and crimping the wires).

Flexible Cable carrier - it's a plastic conduit that is split along it's length - used on cars and boats extensively. Comes in small - 12g size to as big as you want. You can find it at any automotive or marine store - cheaper at the auto for sure!!!Image

Tim, Is this on your new bike or old bike? It realy does not do anything except hide the wires from the minds eye! Tonys suggestion is good and I would use it only where the wires are exposed. They make that stuff in all kinds of thicknesses and diameters You may want to hunt down the thin motorcycle stuff. I used to get it at Carlisie Swap Meets but it is hard to find. The thick stuff does not
Looks more like someone has cut and performed modifications and not dry rot. Tell tail are the white ties.

Thanks for the replies! This is the new GS, the 2001 R1150GS.

I ended up using the self-sealing silicone rubber tape. The insulation was indeed dry rotted. In some places, it fell off when I touched it. I wanted the wires to be sealed. I didn't want the indiviual wires exposed to the elements.

The silicone tape worked very well, as you can see in the pictures below.

While I was at it, I installed a waterproof USB port for charging my GPS or smart phone!
