Lube Splines

Postby Belizer on Tue Jan 24, 2012 6:13 pm

Plan on lubing splines on my 2001 1150 GS. Is there a specific lube that is best to use. What rated heat gun is needed for the job - will a cheap 1500 watt unit work.

Thanks

As for the lube, I use "Honda Moly 60 paste" it is highly recommended and works well.

But I have 2009 R1200GS and didn't need a heat gun to get at the lower splines, I don't know the procedure for a 1150 GS.

Ride well,

I agree w/the Moly 60 - great stuff!

The 1200s have a different way of connecting the final drive than the 1100s/1150s. Definitely need a heat gun for the 1100/1150!!

Does BMW still make shaft-drive bikes?
Seriously, a few years back Paul Glaves in his MON tech column recommended mixing Honda Moly 60 in 1:1 ratio with Wurth Sig 3000 spline grease. I don't recall the specific rationale. Also, some riders advocate using Guard Dog's GD-525 Moly Grease. I'm not certain that (similar to engine oils, etc.) any one moly grease is all that superior to its competitors. Scott

I think you're probably 100% right on that.

And most of them made by the same company.

I used a cheapo Harbor Freight heat gun on our R11xx bikes, when pulling the transmission. It works, but be patient.

If you're REAL careful not to pull the front 1/2 of the drive shaft out too far [-X , you can pull the arm with the final drive attached & dispense with the heat gun. #-o

I think the rationale was that the carrier in the Honda grease dries up too soon and that the mixture with Wurth stays greasy longer. (Or some such.)

Re: Lube Splines - Update

Thanks everyone that provided input. Wes offered to help with the FD spline lube. Since the GS has 45K miles, I decide to take it to George at Uber and had him pull the trans to lube both splines. They were both dry, but not damaged.

More importantly, the slave cylinder was corroded, even though I change the fluid every year. I had a similar situation 40K miles ago and caught it in time them too, so the spline lube job caught a bigger problem that would have been costly.

Back on the road in just a few days and the $500 was worth it. Ready for the next 50K

Thanks
