'08 Labor Day Weekend Rally Check In

Postby endobobdds » Mon Sep 01, 2008 8:51 pm

Hope a lot of the club members were able to get out on the bike this weekend! First time for me attending the Finger Lakes Rally - it was fantastic! Almost 1,500 people in attendance. Great weather, a lot of
BMWBMW folks, great roads, wines, and museums! :D

I left about 9 AM Friday and got home around 5 PM Monday. Mostly back roads - a little over 24 hours in the saddle and just over 1,200 miles.

Everyone home safely?

Yes, thanks, Bob, Jody and I got home close to 6:00, having spent some extra time and miles on backroads. We avoided Williamsport and Harrisburg, the two choke points on the route, by going west of U.S. 15 and following a sequence of state routes 14, 328, 287, 44, 45, 235/333/75, and 74. We were on most of those with Jerry Skene last year, and we wanted to re-do the route to firm it up in our minds. There are enough bucolic scenes and switch-back ridges to cross that it's a very enjoyable way to get through PA more or less paralleling U.S. 15. Once we got back onto 15 below Harrisburg, we bombed it on home staying on 15. Traffic was amazingly light and congenial. The day started in fleece with heated handgrips and ended up in near-90° Washington-metro heat!

Finger Lakes Rally is always a very pleasant experience. The Finger Lakes club does a great job of putting on a rally.

No fires were allowed in the NY state park for the Finger Lakes Rally. One of the clubs had a pile of wood with LED lights to make it look like a fire.:D

The best reason I know to NOT go to the Finger Lakes! :D Besides, 1500 people and all the "events" just take away from my relaxation of a rally, which is why I like the Sherando rally.

We had a GREAT time at the Finger Lakes. What an awesome rally!!!! I had no idea it was sooooo beautiful up there!!! The roads were great and the rally was very nice!!!

We went to the PA Grand Canyon on the way home via some back roads and then slab :( It was very nice!! Got home around 9pm last night!

If there were "events" there - I missed them! It was a much better rally than I had expected!! Great to see everyone there!!

It was a great time. I put over 1,000 miles on The Baby, hit a trivia spot and missed all the seminars AGAIN.

I left Monday around 8 AM and got home around 1:30 PM. It was a nice ride even though Doofus (ZUMO) was trying to take me somewhere to HELL I didn't want to go. Rode routes CR15 to CR6 to connect to 14 all the way down to 11/15 and into 83 home. Beautiful roads and countryside. Man, was I glad I didn't run into any gravel roads.

Passed through some serious fog along route CR6. I wanted to stop and take some pics of it, but knowing my luck, I might have gotten hit by a car because of the low visibility. Nowhere to pull over safely to take the pictures.

It was great meeting you Bob and seeing everyone else there.

BTW, Nate has a "twin". I saw him at the Seneca Lodge.
