What goes tic tic.......

Postby guitardad » Sun Apr 20, 2008 10:24 pm

The actual noise went like this: "tic TIC tap TAP knock KNOCK bang BANG BANG" Not a good series of noises to hear as you're zooming down I-40 at the start of the Cape Fear 1000 Mini-Rally. At 5:17 in the morning. 13 miles into the rally. #-o As I thumbed the engine cutoff switch, I looked down at the instruments. Oil Pressure light is on. Crap! I coasted to a stop on the side of the road, got off the bike, and got out my flashlight. The problem was obvious, even in the dark. I called the Rallymaster, and he woke up Eddie James, who was helping with the rally, and happened to be trailering a bike to his home in Asheville. So Clifford got a ride back to Rally HQ.

In daylight, we got a better look at the problem. Can anybody tell me what's wrong with this picture:

More tomorrow, but let's see who gets it right first........

Ummm, either it's REALLY clean or you seem to be missing a sight glass.

Looks like you lost your sight glass there buddy....How the heck did that happen?

I thought there was an oil pressure kill switch that would shut the engine down in the event of pressure loss. :-k

Crap that sucks.

BUT, that is without a doubt the cleanest, clearest, most transparent, invisible sight glass I have ever seen.

Very good, gentlemen!!! In fact, what's missing is one of these:

Image

If there was an oil pressure kill function on this '94 R1100RS, it wasn't quick enough. Just an idiot light. As in, "Your engine is toast, YOU IDIOT!" The details of getting a replacement sight glass are better told in person. But once it was in, it took 3 quarts of oil to get anything showing in the glass. Remarkably, the engine started and ran! But it continued to make those "very expensive" noises. I THINK the heads are still usable, but the bottom end is completely shot. I'll be asking some questions to try and tell for sure. If I'm right, this will turn into a series on how to install a new short block into an older oilhead.

(I just did an oil change last Wednesday. 4 quarts of fresh Mobil 1 15W-50. At least I didn't Enloe it!!!!! )

Gives new meaning to "check your sight glass." Damn, Chaz, that's a real bummer. Clifford seems to have something against rallying in NC.

Gently, run it a little, and just let it make the noise. It might settle down. Unless a bearing seized the hydraulic tensioners might be collapsed and need to re inflate. Drive it around a little and see it quiets down

I tried that, Chris. I got a new sight glass, installed it, refilled the oil, and started the engine back up. I let it run for 30 seconds or so. The BANG-BANG noise never abated. It's not the gentle tic-tic that you get for a few seconds after an oil change. My guess (and it's just a guess right now) is that the bearings down at the bottom end - either crankshaft, con rod big end, or both - are wiped out.

Not unheard of. As I told the story hanging out that evening, several people, including Don Graling, said, "Oh, I've got a spare one in my tank bag. Do you want it?"

I heard several people say that it is a common thing for the 1100/1150's and several said they did or used to always carry a spare one. I thought they were kidding but no - they told me they were serious!!

Soooo - tape a spare somewhere on your bike!!!

Damn, Chaz!!! It's my fault - you seem to have trouble at the rallies I don't attend. I'll do better next time, promise!

Well I am sorry to hear that it is broken, BUT this is an opportunity to tear it down and rebuild it! WHAT FUN! (I'm serious)

or you could give Beemer Boneyard a call....

What you are going to find is something like...

You can really see how the two halves are overlapped and fuzed together.

On the cam you can see some damage:

This is what it looks like during the operation:

And it takes a whole lot of this to get it back together:
Image

A new verb: To Chaz a bike it to Enloe it through the loss of a sight glass.
The rule is perfect: in all matters of opinion our adversaries are insane.
