How long of a period of inactivity while logged in are we signed out? Or is there?

Don't know. I don't think you ever get signed out but the cookie will expire and you'll loose all the "new since last visit" posts. Couple hours or so on that one.

I know that I have signed in, left unattended and when I came back, I was logged out.
