What's your next step?

Postby bdimon » Tue Feb 18, 2020 12:50 am

It's been a few years since I last took some training. I'm comfortable on my bike but I know I could ride smoother and take better lines through corners. Time for the next step.

A lot of riders are not interested in taking another riding class after they get their license. They say that they don't ride fast or they only ride in groups. I never understood the groups argument. Dropping the bike is always a worry if you have a nice bike. While there is a risk of dropping your bike in a class, the consequences are far less severe than crashing it on the road. It's best to risk the former to avoid the latter.

In September, Reg Prigmore's CLASS Ride will come to Virginia International Raceway. Although it's on a race track, it's not a race school. This would be great for leaning and getting comfortable at higher speeds. https://classrides.com/

The California Superbike School will come to both Virginia International Raceway and New Jersey Motorsports Park. This is another class on a racetrack and you can use your bike or rent one of their BMW S1000RR. https://superbikeschool.com/

Lee Park's Total Control Advanced Riding Clinic, Level 2 is the follow on to the Level 1 course that I teach. It is taught in a large paved lot using cones to lay out the exercises. I am a fan of this curriculum because it made me comfortable in the corners and a smoother rider. https://www.totalcontroltraining.net/

If you are in the Military, the Circuit RiderCourse is offered at Quantico. This is a collaboration between the MSF, the Kevin Schwantz School, and the Champions Riding School. I'm not sure who qualifies but I guess your base safety officer would know. https://www.teamamtusa.com/

I signed up for the Total Control Advanced Riding Clinic, Level 2 in May. What will your next step be?

If you're interested in CLASS at VIR, give our service manager Stuart Beatson a call. He's been an instructor for CLASS for more than 20 years, and he can answer any questions you might have about what and how they teach. As Bruce mentioned, it's not a race school the point is to learn to be smooth and in control at whatever speed you choose.

BTW, Morton's BMW is happy to be the sponsor and reason that CLASS comes to Virginia every year :D
