I-66 HOT lanes

Postby dcgsrider » Mon Dec 11, 2017 1:26 pm

I'm a daily commuter (inbound only) on the I-66 HOT lanes inside the Beltway, and, wow, it's like night and day. It's a consistent 50-55 mph all the way past the Rosslyn tunnel. Motorcycles do not need an E-ZPass to use 66 during rush hour.

Removing the exemptions for "clean fuel" vehicles, "airport users" (which was largely unenforceable), and scaring off the cheaters with exorbitant tolls and fees seems to be working. VDOT's target is to adjust pricing to keep the road flowing at 45+ mph.

I do expect traffic to pick up once people adjust to the new set-up. For whatever reason, slugging never caught on in the 66 corridor. Maybe it will now.

This info may be out of date: Motorcycles do not need an EZPass to use the HOV lanes therefore do not get charged.

Is there an exemption for HOT Lanes (variable price depending on traffic) as well? Or motorcycles would have to pay the same as cars?
Trying to avoid a misunderstanding and a ticket in the mail.

Also, the EZPass website still does not have any motorcycle listing, so I am not sure how they would recognize my ride as a 2-wheeler. I keep my transponder in my trunk on HOV's.

Motorcycles do not pay HOT lane tolls and do not need an EZPass transponder to use the Virginia HOT lanes, period. Ever. :)

Motorcycle EZPasses carry a code "136" that distinguishes them from those used for cages, which carry a code "72" for two-axle vehicles up to 7,000 pounds. As such, you cannot use the same EZPass transponder for more than one vehicle class. You can have one account, but need multiple transponders.

If you should happen to travel under the toll gantries in the HOT lanes with a "136" transponder on your bike, you will not be charged. Presumably if you show up as a photo violation without an EZPass, they will see it's a motorcycle tag and simply ignore the violation.

Paul is correct. You can verify this by checking your account. All "free" sections will record your passing, but have a zero charge. That said, 66 has had some glitches on MCs recently, so make sure you review your account if you ride on them during HOV periods.

The VA EZPass link I provided says code 136 is valid for 2- and 3-wheeled motorcycles "up to 7,000 lbs." A 3.5-ton motorcycle would truly be an amazing sight.

I can second this .... mc = free, now if we can get the same for the Toll Road and the Green Way.

Thx for the feedback. Even from GeorgeinVA! :)
Can an EZPass typed for car get re-typed for 136 - motorcycle? Since I am w/o car, I have an extra slim EZPass.

Possibly, but you would have to ask.
