VCOM Lobby Day, 1/14/18

Actually a "no-lobby" day in 2018, because legislators are in temporary quarters.

Virginia Motorcyclist Lobby Day Meeting
January 14, 2018
The Virginia Coalition of Motorcyclists and Tom McGrath's Motorcycle Law Group would like to invite all interested motorcyclists to attend this year's Motorcycle Lobby Day Preparation Meeting. The meeting will be held on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. at the Richmond Marriott Short Pump. The hotel is located at 4240 Dominion Blvd., Glen Allen, VA. Virginia Coalition of Motorcyclists lobbyists will lead an informational meeting to discuss this year's legislation affecting motorcyclists. We will also discuss how to talk to your legislators about these issues. Later that evening, attendees will enjoy a free BBQ dinner.

Due to the temporary housing change of the legislative offices, there will be no mass trip to the Capitol on the following Monday. This is by the gentle request of the clerk’s office. The legislators are in temporary housing while the General Assembly Building is being renovated, and space is quite limited. Therefore, in an effort to accommodate the clerk’s wishes, we will have our usual Sunday informational meeting, and encourage attendees to make individual appointments with their Senators and Delegates at a later date.

As always, there will be numerous bills submitted at the last minute which may negatively affect motorcycling. As these bills are filed, we will identify them, post them on the email list, and discuss them at the meeting so that we can convince legislators to oppose them. Those who have participated in Lobby Day in the past remember bills that we have defeated such as the one that would have required proof of insurance before one person could sell another person a motorcycle, even if the person buying the motorcycle had no intention of putting the bike on the road. We also defeated the bill that would have prohibited children under eight from riding with their parents or grandparents. We defeated that bill by pointing out that the proposed law improperly infringed on the rights and responsibilities of parents. We have also successfully encouraged legislators to pass laws which benefit motorcyclists, as we did with the law repealing the prohibition against two motorcycles traveling abreast of one another in a single lane, or the bill increasing access to rider training by allowing private training sites.

I encourage everyone who can to join us. It is a lot of fun, it is educational, and most importantly it shows the legislators that motorcyclists are a significant and active portion of the electorate.

For more information you may call VCOM at (800) 437-9434. If you wish to book a room at the hotel you may call (804) 965-9500. Make sure to ask for the VCOM rate of $109.00 per night. We would also encourage you to go the event Facebook Page at https://www.facebook.com/events/136542787107228/ and let us know if you plan to attend. We hope to see you at the meeting.
