Winter Solstice Lunar Eclipse

Stop and smell the roses, and while you're at it take a picture or two.

Winter Solstice Lunar Eclipse

This shot was taken 25 minutes into the eclipse, about the time the moon began dropping behind the trees next to my house.

These last shots were taken near the beginning of totality, when the moon was getting deeper into the trees and the camera began signaling that the battery was running low. It was time to call it a night.

Nice shots of the color change. I had all sorts of ideas of staying up late enough to see it, but I couldn't last. I did get a nice shot of the full moon, though, before the clouds started moving in.

Nice detail, Steve. Tycho Crater and its ejecta rays are visible on the lower right of your photo. Cool!

Thanks, Rick.

Thanks! I stuck a 500mm mirror lens on my Nikon D70, let it sit outside for a while to acclimate the glass to the cold, and used a good tripod. I just wish it had stayed clear by my house and that I could have stayed up long enough to get the red moon.
