The second one Jim posted looked pretty bad to me. The bus on the right is all wrong, and the 'focus blur' as you go up the image has too much of a sudden change. The distant skyscrapers are no more out of focus than the top of the bus.

Clearly this technique works well when the position on the page directly correlates to the distance from the lens, like in the very first photo, but not so well on very flat shots where near objects are superimposed on distant ones.

I believe the term you're looking for is "perspective control", which is done with lenses that can be tilted and/or shifted. Typically that type of view was created with a view camera, but in the last 20 years or so, Nikon and Canon (and others) have come out with perspective control lenses enabling users of 35mm cameras to be able to do the same kind of stuff.

are you talking about something like "Lens babys" that are used a lot in architectual work to shift perspective?

No, I was thinking more along the lines of a tilt-shift lens: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/ef_lens_lineup/ts_e_24mm_f_3_5l_ii I was not even aware of the "Lens Baby" gizmos.

I think LBs are not available for Canon. The TS-E lenses look like lot of fun, though. I can see several uses, including tech photos of small objects that are not oriented to the standard focal plane.

sure are, check the site, canon is listed. And looking at the pic I linked which got changed I see they are now available for the Mirco Four/thirds systems so may just have to pick one up for my Pen, once I pay off the two new lens I got prior to my trip to Sedona.

8) Built in Photoshop. Most of the "scene" menu items are just that!
