I have been spending a lot of quality riding time on the roads of Carroll County--particularly south of a imaginary line that runs east and west through Westminster and parallels the southern boarder of the county. CC is between Frederick & Baltimore Counties. There are some gravel sections, but even when there are, they're usually not more than a few miles long, and they're very hard packed--unless there's been very recent rains. In most cases, if you stay off the main roads you'll find roads that are anything but straight, with signficant elevation changes--at least for the piedmont of MD--and with little or no traffic on them. Perfect definitions of what Jim Ford would call "invisible roads".
Carroll County's police force--the Sheriff's department is small and the county is not. They have to rely a lot of the MD State Police. Once your on the invisible roads chances of seeing a gendarme drop like a stone--unless you're particularly "lucky"!
