A ride to Staunton?

Postby ChaseH » Wed Apr 14, 2010 9:04 am

I looking into planning a nice overnight to Staunton soon. Any opinions on the route I've mapped out below? It's not perfect, best the best I could manage with Dan's new map embedding technique on the site. It's easier to manage if switched to MAP from Sat and zoomed in a bit.

Any bad choices made here on roads, and any suggestions as alternatives?

Thanks

There are alot of great ways to go. Are you looking for a time frame, scenic, really scenic and no time frame?

What Jim said. The hardest part is getting out of the DC NVA area.

Looking for good scenic roads that ride well, but aren't too slow. Skyline is brutally slow for me. Ideal is single lane 45mph limit (posted) and good conditions. The route I mapped out seems to qualify most of the way, and I used the street view to get a feel for a lot of it along the way.

BTW, leaving Morton's this past Saturday, I bailed off 95N sooner than even expected, as volumes were high, onto 17N and then soon took a random right on what turned out to be a great way to make my way North, eventually through Nokesville, onto Clifton and then home. Elk run was a good part of it. Hartline I guess was starting point.

When I go to Harrisonburg on business, I sometimes like to go out to Stephens City, then down through Lebanon Church to Columbia Furnace and pick up RT 42, it's a nice ride. You could stay on RT42 through Bridgewater to Churchville and then take RT 250 into Staunton.

Look at 613 thru Singers Glen ( a bit south of New Market) and then 713 as you get south.
