Route Advice Please - To New England

Postby ChaseH » Sun Apr 11, 2010 7:12 pm

I'm hoping to ride up to see friends in New England over an extended Memorial Day weekend. While I may end up on 95N for much of the way because of timing, I'm hoping not to since 1. It sucks and 2. It's likely crowded and will have some periods of stop and go.

Can anyone recommend a way to get from here to Southern Connecticut that would avoid or minimize time on 95N?

You don't say where in southern CT, but 83->81->84 is how I like to head north to avoid the traffic and the tolls on 95. It's a little longer, but less stressful. Of course that depends on where in CT you're going... Unless there's a ton of construction on 81, which it always seems there is.

Thanks Kitty. I'm headed to meet a friend in Greenwich, and then onward up to my old playground in Central Mass and beyond.

Any thoughts on 83-81-80-287? 287 should then dump me onto 95 close to Greenwich then it looks like, but I don't know about the virtues of 80.

If you're going to take the 83-81 option, take a look at 78 vs 80 and follow 287 all the way around.

Thanks, the distance looks similar. Is 78 a more comforable ride?

Never taken that section of 80 between 81 and 287 so I can't compare. I would think there would be less traffic though as you get closer to NJ.
