Daytona disappointment

Postby pbharvey on Mon Mar 12, 2007 12:51 pm

At Daytona this year they did not allow public access to the garages. The gate guard told us it was an AMA rule. It makes the entire race experience much, much less enjoyable, especially at a track like Daytona where you are pretty much seperated from the riders anyway. Does anyone know they are doing this at all the races?

At the pro-ams like summit point and VIR I know you are allowed in the pits. I am not sure about the professional Moto GP racing though.

MotoGP you have to be boinking someone important to get into the Pits and it's for a limited time I believe. There is waaaaaay to much money invested to let the general public fondle it.

Astute observation. I didn't even notice it until a I re-read it. I guess that speaks to the validity of your statement. (was that a little more plain and grown up?)

if you ain't a owner, sponsor or member of the team of any nature, you don't belong poke'n around! sorry, but liability or the possibility of any "funny stuff" prohibits you for getting up close & personal!

At Daytona last year and at VIR in years past you could get right up to the garage and team trailers/tents and watch a mechanic from 8 feet away as he fiddled with the bikes. You could get run over by a sweaty rider riding his scooter back from the pit and you could watch the team eat lunch. Standing there and observing what goes into a race team and how all the pieces come together makes the whole race experience personal, fun, and interactive. Most of the privateers are happy to have someone come up to them and pay them some attention. I've seen guys pulling a 16 foot trailer with a leisure van beat some of the factory teams with multiple 45 foot big rigs and motorcoaches. As far as I'm concerned, motorcycle racing in the US has a very small fan base and I feel a sense of community at the races. Isolating the race teams from the fans is a mistake. I hope this is a Daytona only rule and not the norm for this race season.

I see what you're saying, yeah I think this is a Daytona only thing. I would hope that the AMA wouldn't go all uppity like that. My previous comment was solely concerning MotoGP. Sorry for the confusion.
