For those who want a bit more info:

My favorite line in the announcement is this:
"Only those who act consistently today are well prepared for the challenges of tomorrow."

The only consistent part of all this is that BMW -- once again -- dabs its foot into something, finally starts having some success, and then drops it. Sigh...

I thought the whole purpose of getting into WBSK (and development of the S1000RR) was to reach a younger market. :?:

Maybe they saw who's been buying the S1000rr recently and decided that was a lost battle, Ron?

Well, I don't know about that. We'll just call that "young at heart".

The literbike market is pretty competitive with the R1 adding many features that are on the RR (modes, traction control, etc). It's also priced in the mid-14's. Then there's the Panigale, priced closer to the RR.

And let's not even talk insurance premiums. I'm glad to be paying $650/yr through Dairyland (max liabilities and $500 deductibles). Steve knows the issues I had before.

My quotes for the RR weren't too bad, but jumped for the HP4.

I can understand that.

From what I remember, BMW wanted in on the sport bike market because that's what a lot of the younger riders wanted to ride. It was a great idea and running WSBK seemed like a great idea to gain credibility. Maybe Steve can lend some insight to overall RR sales, but it appears that the dealers around here are selling their allotments every year. I'd be curious if BMW got a share of the youth market or if the RR buyers were all older guys like me.

Still a shame to see BMW exit WSBK, especially since the bike is gaining some consistency. They just need to find a way to beat Aprilia.

I think last weeks race in Moscow, before the terrible tragedy, showed the superiority of electronics more than anything else, and I think is what makes them so attractive for the street rider. Their systems are able to conquer those conditions far better than the competition, in a race that became about more than the usual factors dominating a race.
