I will be eagerly following, as usual, but from Vienna this time. Can anyone share other forum threads that will be following the rally? I know in the past there was a good Yamaha FJR forum discussion in touch with many rally riders, etc.

ETA: I found the Yamaha thread from last time: http://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.ph ... nside-view

I heard Chris Sakala is sitting out this year, I think he recently moved? I forget the reason, but I remember I thought it was entirely reasonable :)

I don't think Chris has moved yet; Nancy is there but as a "gopher" not a rider this year; Don is probably boating. and I'm not there..... yet :D

Some other club members that ARE riding are Allen Hatcher; Jeff Wilson, and hmmmm not sure who else...

I wish all the riders a Great ride!

I worked tech inspection Saturday and Sunday.

I didn't see Jeff Wilson there at all. Allen was there and got out of the gate safely.

It was raining at the start, but the showers were kind of spotty, so some riders may get a lot, some not so much.

I ran into a couple west coast riders on my way home - in addition to Ed Phelps :D

Some info on links:

Official Rally site with ride reports, spot-tracking info, etc: http://www.ironbuttrally.com/IBR/2013.cfm

As mentioned, the FJR forum has some great info and already up to 14 pages: http://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php/topic/153132-2013-iron-butt-rally-the-inside-view/

Link to pics, this was on the FJR site as well: http://tobie.smugmug.com/Motorcycles/Iron-Butt-Rally-2013/30225872_5gNwbS#!i=2609412437&k=HXwtD5Q

So clear your calendar to get caught up on ride reports, forums, and pics. I should have minimal work productivity between now and when I leave for MOA on 7/11.

Checkpoint 1 approaches... The riders I've been in contact with are doing okay, but a couple annoyances, boots (have a brand new pair ready to bring), V-1 (ready to bring) as well as a Zumo 550, haven't found one of those yet. If someone has a Zumo 550 and could get with me between Baltimore and Frederick before 10AM, that'd be GREAT! We had a suggestion for a possible fix, but I'm not sure if it'll work or not. They do have a back up, but would prefer to maintain two GPS units during the rally if they can.

I know there's others, I just don't know about them.

checkpoints can be intense, but are still fun for spectators. Just remember that the riders have a purpose and won't be terribly into chatting with spectators.

Tis true, my hair is long and I am now a frigging hippie. I hang my head in shame at all IBA events, but in order to save the money for a divorce lawyer in favor of gas and farkle money, the hair must stay unfortunately :( Do you have ANY idea how painful it was for me to dole out those creative and stylish haircuts in Cranberry with my own hair so embarrassingly long? Twas awful, I assure you.

Riders are on the road. Scoring went late, midnight. We started at 4PM. I will not be in Rancho Cordova, but I will be at the finish to score and welcome the new 'doners' to the fold.

Thanks for the update Nancy! Great to see pics of you in full harassment mode during initial inspections.

Wow! The standings are so interesting to look at! I just checked the public spotwalla page and find myself hoping that some of the riders farthest east have a malfunctioning spot... Or at least, that there's some kind of grand plan that I can't decipher without the rally pack. They need to be in Rancho Cordova by 8PM to avoid penalty points, 10PM to avoid a DNF.

Quick shout out to Roger Sinclair and George Beemer Uber Alles. Both were terrific a the start and again at the checkpoint assisting riders with whatever it was that needed assisting. They are terrific guys and y'all are lucky to have them in the area if you find yourself needing support. Roger was a huge help to me personally in 09 and George similar in 11. Walt is a wonderful wrench, but there are some things we felt more comfortable leaving to the pros - Roger and George!

In general, the riders looked good and were in good spirits. There was, of course, heartbreak at the scoring table. I'm sure you're familiar with the phrase, "this hurts me more than it hurts you." I'm not sure I could carry it *that* far, but some of the points riders lost were very heart breaking for the scorers. :( You know they did it, but they just didn't do the paperwork quite right, and that is part of the game. Or, you know they were there, they just didn't take the correct photo. Tom Austin did a really good job with fairness (IMO) in the scoring room when scorers had questions about whether or not something would be accepted.
