That's been pretty big news around here, and we're looking forward to it. There are plans for an oval track and a road racing track, as well as other facilities. We're hoping to come up with some kind of arrangement to do track days and such when the place is actually built. Definitely stay tuned!

It's a good article. No facility has every been built without any opposition. I just hope that it can weather the storm. Morton's sending anyone to these meetings? Perhaps Jeff should represent.

There's a public meeting tonight, but the anti-racetrack group has announced they are boycotting it:

http://news.fredericksburg.com/spotsygo ... owi=radley

They seem to be threatened by the fact that some of the supporters are jerks who have the temerity to curse at them anonymously via the Internet. Why, I've never seen such a thing. Oh, my stars... Welcome to the real world.

The url above also has a link to the letter the group sent to the county. Among other things, they seem to expect the racetrack sponsors to have final engineering drawings available at this, the very first meeting to even discuss the track. I'm as much a supporter of environmental issues as anyone, but they seem a little thin-skinned and unrealistic in their expectations.

Sometimes you find yourself blessed in life to have such inept opposition. If a crank with an agenda and an email account are all that ultimately opposed this facility, then the county is in very fine shape.

When I was at the Greer Enduro Skills training, the instructor took us on a couple =D> =D> laps of the car track (no cars present!!!) This was on a GS running TKC80 knobbies. I just may have to plan for a track day next year. Scott

Wait ... what?

Some people are cursing at the track opponents on the internet.

The track opponents decide to boycott the public meeting about the track they are opposing.

How are those two things even related??

The idiocy of some people just boggles my mind.

So, I went to the public meeting tonight to represent Morton's. The meeting was supposed to start at 6:30 pm, and I got there about 6:35 to find an overflow crowd spreading from the hotel meeting room out into the hallway. When I was able to work my way inside, I counted approximately 200 people, and all who expressed an opinion gave support to the project.

There were people who lived literally next door to the current track in Manassas; lots of folks like me who, judging by the attire -- I in my Morton's BMW shirt, others in shirts or jackets related to motorsports businesses -- have a personal or business connection to such a project; the legendary drag racer Bunny Burkett, who ran her first race at Dominion Raceway 48 years ago; and other racers, local residents, politicians, etc.

Because of the crowd, it was a little tough to hear everything that was said, but the racing complex looks awesome. Drag strip, oval track, and road racing course, accompanied by other facilities, including perhaps a drive-in movie area. The plan proposes an entertainment complex centered around, but not limited to, motorsports. I and others asked about the facility welcoming clubs and such to use the tracks, and we were assured that would be happening -- track days, here we come! Assuming all goes as hoped -- sometimes a difficult prospect when local politics is involved -- the tracks should be up and running in the spring of 2014.

There's a lot to do between now and then, of course, but this looks like an incredible addition to our area. The complex will be just 10 miles from Morton's. This would obviously be the closest road course to northern Virginia and the DC area, and we're looking forward to planning events with them :D

Latest update on the local race track from an e-mail sent out by Steve Britt, the owner of Dominion Raceway:

Thanks so much for all the support, assistance and encouragement. It would have never been possible without your efforts. Next Tuesday we will have our final County meeting. One big meeting with everything on the line. Sounds just like racing doesn't it...

The good news is if we are approved Tuesday night we are off to the races. The timing of the meeting and the importance of a favorable outcome cannot be overstated. With the exception of some minor issues that I hope will fall into place soon we are ready to go. The site plan is in its final form and literally I would expect to submit it late next week for permit. We are planning to send plans out concurrent with filing for pricing and literally based on everything I know today actual site construction could hopefully commence in approximately (4) weeks ...

Spotsylvania County has been great and we are truly lucky to be working with them. It is however critically important to be present Tuesday and speak in support of our application if you can. That couple of minutes each of you take at the podium makes such a big difference, it gives the Commissioners and Supervisors the confidence they need to vote yes for our application. While each of us understand racing and the many benefits that flow from it we are asking decision makers that don't have that experience to take our word for it and trust in what we say. The heart felt support and out pouring literally from day 1 has made this possible. We live in a day and time when its safer to do nothing, but we all know that this facility, built for the community and for Motor sports enthusiasts of all types, is a worthwhile endeavor. Thank you in advance for what you have done to make it a reality. I will see you Tuesday night!!!! My best, Steve Britt

The combined Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors meeting is 6:00 p.m. on May 28th at the Holbert Building, 9104 Courthouse Road, Spotsylvania, VA 22553
