Smoke Chasing Grand Tour 2012

Postby wilsonjw42 » Sat Dec 17, 2011 9:50 pm

From Team Strange:

Smoke Chasing Grand Tour will return in 2012. For those of you who are unaware, Smoke Chasing is a self-paced BBQ/Smokehouse themed Grand Tour sponsored as part of the AMA Grand Tours series. Like SCGT11, SCGT12 will have several challenges but will include several news twists and options to keep you entertained. The GT will run from March 1st to November 30th. Registration will open in February using Jason Jonas Ride Master system http://rides.jasonjonas.com). Our website http://www.smokechasing.com will be up and running shortly to provide the new and improved rules and challenges. Mark your calendars and look out for future updates.

Interestingly, no sooner did Team Strange begin planning to extend SCGT into 2012 when a well-established hater of Eddie James, Mr. Bubba Kolb chimed in with the I hate you Eddie, but God knows I miss ya Challenge.

Bubba Kolb is matching T-shirt sponsors dollar-for-dollar in Smoke Chasing Grand Tour 2012. Thats right! Bubba will match every dollar donated towards Smoke Chasing T-shirts up to $2,500. Last year SCGT11 had 400+ riders and raised over $7,000 for the Eddie James Foundation for Children (http://www.eddiesroad.org) without a single T-shirt sponsor and this year we aim to do much better. Our SCGT T-shirts are really cool but they are also high demand and low profit so sponsors ensure we can have the maximum return for Eddies Road. All donations are appreciated and can be made by sending a check or money order to Team Strange, PO Box 1442 Lexington Park, MD 20653.

All donors over $100 will receive a free SCGT12 T-shirt when the GT begins.
As always, the first and foremost goal of Team Stranges SCGT is to provide a memorable experience for riders. But since we are also a bunch of do-gooders please join us in meeting Bubbas challenge.

Please pass this message along!

I did the 2011 Smoke Chasing Tour, and I plan to do this one, too. Any excuse to find BBQ joints works for me :D

I'm happy to report that Morton's BMW has signed up as a sponsor of the 2012 Smoke Chasing Grand Tour!

Among other things, we're going to sponsor a Morton's "team" so that anyone who wants to sign up through us can get a discount on the signup fee, cost of the t-shirts, etc. I should be getting complete info in about a week, so look for more info here and in our e-newsletter for January. This is for a terrific charity started by a good guy (Eddie James) and continued by his fiance and friends. We hope a lot of you will sign up, either with us or individually, to support it. And to eat lots of tasty, tasty, BBQ... :D

I've now gotten the word on signing up people for the Smoke Chasing Grand Tour. If you get me your name BEFORE you register at their website, you'll get a 20% discount on the fee for the tour, as well as any purchases you make (e.g., the Smoke Chasing t-shirt).

Once I get your name, I'll pass it on to the SCGT folks, so they'll know to give you your discount when you check out. Just drop me an e-mail at steve@mortonsbmw.com or let me know here that you want to be on the Morton's BMW team for Smoke Chasing. Mmmmm, BBQ... :D

Here's another incentive for you: The Morton's BMW team member who accumulates the highest number of points will receive a prize with a minimum value of at least $50! Lots of BBQ and a $50 prize -- what's not to like? :D

A reminder for those wanting to be on the Morton's BMW Smoke Chasing team: Be sure to let me know BEFORE you sign up on the website. That way, I can forward your name to the SCGT people and you'll get your discounts and qualify for the team prize.

I don't know that there will be any mandatory stops. There weren't last year. The only requirement last year was that the place have some variation of barbecue (BBQ, Bar-B-Q, Bar-B-Cue, etc.) in the name. Virginia BBQ -- yes. Virginia Fried Chicken, which also has BBQ -- no.

Guys,

Here is a message from the SCGT Grillmaster (he's waiting for a mod to approve his account so that he can post here directly):

A rider has asked about mandatory stops. The mandatory stop details have not yet been revealed but we can answer a few questions below that will help.

Why do you have mandatory stops? Style points - something to keep you on your toes - a way to introduce you to what we think is some of the the best "Q" in the country.

Do I get extra BBQ points for visiting a mandatory stop? No. But the Grillmaster is sending prizes to the mandatory stop(s) on a totally random
basis and you cold get something cool for stopping in.

What if I don't want to do a mandatory stop? You will not receive the 5 BBQ points for a state if you do not complete the mandatory stop. Zero point zero Mr. Blutarsky.

How many states will have mandatory stops? Not many. So far the Grillmaster has only agree to one. The locations have to be reasonably
central/convenient in a state and we have to love the food.

If a state does not have a mandatory stop is it the only place I can stop in the state? No. You have to complete the mandatory stop in the state but you can go to as many other places as you want before or after doing so.

Thanks for the posts. We have one mandatory stop at Ole Time Barbeque in Raleigh NC and it is unlikely we will add any more. So you will just have to pay attention in NC but the rest of the states should be riders choice. The cool thing is that this particular BBQ restaurant was highly rated by last years riders and we believe it to be one of the best examples of BBQ in the region.

If there are any changes, they will be made prior to January 15th.

Outside of this stop we have also tweaked the ride based upon rider feedback. There are more finishing options, there will be a grand champion, and we have added some challenging "Side Dishes" to earn BBQ point and add to the fun.

Awesome! That's only four hours from my house. Sounds like a good lunch run :D

I'm in Steve, thanks. Is Team Mortons giving us a meal allowance or just a mileage allowance? :feedme:

Oh and if team rules preclude team members from claiming the same BBQ joint, I have dibbs on Andy Nelsons. :D

By the way, please drop me a note with your actual e-mail address so I can notify the SCGT folks that you're on our team.
