From Jim Bain, this afternoon:
----------
Merry Christmas to all!
It is that time of year when many of us are wrapped up in all the hustle and bustle surrounding the Holiday Season, but I wanted to take a few minutes to bring you up to speed on what you can expect for the 2012 Cape Fear 1000 Rally.
First, many of you have asked and it is time to formally announce the starting locations (by now most of you should know the dates - the third weekend of April, starting on Friday and ending in Wilmington, NC on Saturday) for the 24+ hour riders. They are: Arcadia, FL; Jamestown, NY; and, Paris, TN. This year the starting time will be moved up one hour, rather than starting at 11:00 am Eastern, +/- 10 minutes, as we have for the last several years, your will be starting at 10:00 am Eastern, +/- 10 minutes, and the DNF time will be 29 hours from your official starting time (i.e., start at 9:57 am on Friday, April 20, 2012 you will be DNF at 2:57 pm on Saturday April 21, 2012). There will not be a penalty period this year - if you are not in on time, you did not finish. The Rest Bonus will be extended, a minimum of 4 hours, up to a max of 6 hours, and the more time spent resting, the more points you can claim. One new feature for 2012 will be a mandatory odometer check - and with it, mileage caps. Details on how this will work will be in the rallybook, so there is no need for you to try to outguess the rallymaster on how he plans to pull this off. It is well-thought out, thoroughly tested and straightforward, so I only expect 30% or so of you to mess it up.
Also, many of you asked, and given the response to my question earlier this year, we will be bringing back the 10-hour Mini-Rally on Saturday, but will be limiting registration for that event to 20 entrants (a 2-up registration will be considered a single entry). The remaining 100 registration slots will be divided amongst the three starting locations of the 24+ hour event.
Several have asked about priority registration. In the past, I have sent out "Christmas Gift" emails to riders of prior events, guaranteed entry for riders who were preparing for the Iron Butt Rally or the IB5K Rally, or sent early registration invitations based on the number of previous CF1K starts. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your point of view, the number of participants in the CF1K has gotten to the point that I could probably fill all available slots without traveling down the pyramid to those riders that have only started one prior CF1K. So, for 2012, if you have started 5 or more prior CF1Ks, you should be getting an early registration invitation email from me. If you are not in that group, you can still get an early registration - however, you will have to work for it. If you want to ride the 24+ hour version and by-pass the general registration, and if you are one of the first 25 prior participants to do so, you must convince a friend or riding buddy that has not participated in a 24-hour or longer rally to sign up with you and you agree to mentor that newbie rider throughout the process - from registration through the end of the Awards Banquet Saturday night. If you choose this option, you do not have to wait for an email, simply send me your name and email address and the name and email address of the newbie that you have brought in and I will take care of it from there. If you want to ride the Mini-rally and by-pass the general registration, and if you are one of the first 5 prior participants to do so, you must convince a friend or riding buddy that has not participated in a LD motorcycle rally of any sort to sign up with you and, again, you agree to mentor that newbie rider throughout the process - from registration through the end of the Awards Banquet Saturday night. If you choose either of these options, you do not have to wait for an email, simply send me your name and email address and the name and email address of the newbie that you have brought in and once the newbie is registered I will take care your registration from there. In any event, all early registration must be complete by the end of the day January 4, 2012 as general registration will open on Friday, January 6, 2012.
Please feel free to share this information with any groups or discussion boards you feel might be interested.
Well, that should give you something to chew on the next few days, so I will close out for now. I hope to get the website updated between now and the 1st of the year, but we all have family and work commitments, so bear with us and be patient. I look forward to seeing all of you in April, if not before.
