very cool motorcycle history site

The Classic Motorcycle web page of the Rider and Road web site has the best timeline I've seen on the development of motorcycles from 1860 to our own era. Illustrated and quick-reading, the entries put a lot of things in  :!: perspective.

It happened that I started looking at the Second Era: 1900-1922 in the "Timeline of Innovation." I was immediately hooked and didn't stop until I'd gone back to the beginning and then through the rest. May it be as much fun for you!

(The Third Era starts in 1923 with the BMW R32 -- "advanced features make this the first REAL motorcycle." :D )

Silver, the "cool and aloof" color.

Gold, the "paying the restorer" color.

John,

Thanks for spotting this very cool (and informative) site for us. I'm purposely not looking at it until this weekend, since I know I won't be able to stop once I start!

Sadly, this web site has gone to greener pastures. I was trying to research info on WWI sidecars used by USA, remembered John posting this, and tried to revisit - anyone have any alternate leads? Scott

Check out:
http://www.landships.freeservers.com/new_pages/arm_mc.htm

The main page of the site links to an associated forum. A quick peek at the forum shows that it is current (recent activity) and it has a references thread.

Hope this helps.

The Classic Rider Web site does appear to be gone for good. The page can still be seen in skeletal form at http://www.rider-and-road.com/ , but no images or formatting, and the internal links go to 404. I'm sorry to see it go -- it was a nice, well-prepared site.

I emailed, hoping that all is well with the author. I'll post again if I learn anything.
