Handle Bar substitute for F800 ST

Postby Bob Brackman » Fri Jun 06, 2008 6:08 pm

I am new to this site. I have an '07 F800 ST. I installed the bar-backs - 1" up and 1" inch back. I want to raise the bar even more than that. Did I see a thread where one of you substituted the handle bar with that of another BMW model handle bar?

Please advise; I have been unable to find that reference again.

I don't recall a thread on here about that since there are only a few of us on the forum (that actively post) who have the F800STs. I posted a thread about installation of barback.

There is no reason you couldn't swap for another set of bars, but if you did change the bars for more pullback, you would definitely need to get longer brake and throttle cables. As you probably realize from installing the barbacks, they don't leave much slack.

Nothing here I can help with, but welcome to the forum, Bob.

Thank you for that info; There was a discussion at the time, and somebody suggested another BMW bar. Yes, it would require new cables and I am not sure how far I want to go with this; had an 1100 GS before and what a switch !!!!

I am in Western WA on the west coast and it is still raining big; we are calling this JuneUary. Thanks again.

I'm new to the forum and club. Have a 2008 F800ST and have the same problem you do. I'd like to have a bit more pullback than the barbacks I have and was told by Bob's the solution is new handlebars.

Did you ever find out what handlebars would work?

Thanks!

Since the club members have not been able to provide much info. I would suggest calling Morton's BMW (540) 891-9844 or other BMW dealerships. I have found that they are generally helpful.

The ST appears to have conventional tubular bars, probably 7/8", so there's a world of possible replacement bars. I'd start with R11xxR bars, which provide a "standard" bike's upright posture. Or you can look at aftermarket suppliers such as HeliBars. Since you already have bar-backs, you have a wide range of potential customization at hand. Check whether the control cables can be rerouted to provide more reach.

(We replaced the upper triple clamp on Jody's R11RS with one that will take tubular bars and fitted R1150R bars. Way better than the stock bars with bar-backs. Rerouting the cables created enough slack to reach.)
2002 R1150RT, Silver
Silver, the "cool and aloof" color.

1971 Triumph Bonneville, Gold
Gold, the "paying the restorer" color.
(Trust me.)

Rox risers will work on your bike with 7/8" handlebars. IIRC you only need to move the hoses/wires behind the trippletree to make them fit without replacing them.

I have them on my GS and they are great!

Thanks, I'll check out those options.

Even with the 1" barbacks I have, the cables are tight. We adjusted the brake lever one day and my brakes kept coming on by themselves! That was a strange 2 mile ride.

We have communication and my husband thought I'd lost my mind. "Why are you stopping in the middle of the road?"

"@##!!@$!! if I know!!!"

Luckily it was very early so there wasn't any traffic and I was able to pull of in a gravel driveway. We cut the zip tie and moved the lever back a bit and the problem was solved.

So I won't be surprised if the cables have to be replaced.

Thanks!

There was a thread quite a while back on this. Either Aether or BenRicci posted pics showing how to re-route your brake cables so they don't tension. I was able to install barbacks that raised the bars 1" and moved them back 1" without replaceing the cables.

This thread has my pix and instructions:

This rerouting will work for the barbacks, but anything with further pull back than that will definitely require a new set of cables.

PLUG: The bike in the pictorial is for sale in the Classifieds area....
