DC area BBQ suggestions please

Postby BluegrassPicker » Fri Feb 19, 2010 5:27 pm

My sister lives in Bethesda, her Birthday is coming up next week & I would like to get her some gift certs for a few BBQ places fairly nearby
There is one she really likes near her home ( can't remember the name - I seem to recall a park across the street).
Do you have a few suggestions? She is also into indian food...

Red Hot and Blue in Arlington's very good. I recommending going with a lot of people, ordering a lot of food, and trying everything. If you like spicy food they make the best hot sauces.

The Black Hog has 2 locations in Frederick County, Urbanna and Frederick City. Been to the Urbanna location more than once, has good BBQ and side dishes. never had room left to try the deserts though.

I am a big fan of BBQ, particularly pulled pork :)

I've hit all the regular DC places but frankly none come close to places like Interstate in Memphis or Jones in Marianna, Ar. I did come across one place in Maryland that is worth the ride, they really do it right. It is called Smokeshack BBQ over in Ft. Washington off of 210. It is North Carolina style, and I knew it was a winner right away when I simply ordered a half pound of pulled pork and slaw, and got a bag with the pork, a pint of really good sauce and another of superb mustard slaw, and a half loaf of white bread. The sauce is a NC vinegar based variant, though darker and thicker, happily without the handfuls of salt so many places love to dump in.

These days when I need a good 4-hour ride to clear the cobwebs I head over the Wilson Bridge, down 210 (with a stop for BBQ) then down along the river to Port Tobacco - great ride and great BBQ!

Try Pig N Steak in Madison, VA. Also lots of good roads to get there.

I know this is a little after the fact, but I'm posting it for future reference. Here are two very good BBQ places in NoVA worth a visit, which are not chain/franchises:
In Del Ray, Arlandria: http://www.bbqdelray.com/
In Alexandria: http://www.sweetfiredonnas.com/

Enjoy!
