Rick, Dave, I heard (by you might wanna confirm!) that BMW won't be at the DC show - if that's important to you. You might want to make the trip to New York if it is!

Tina,

How thoughtful of you, not to mention timely!

The latest installment of the story, as of this past Saturday evening:

Did you go to the concert? I thought they put on an outstanding show.

I've said it a gajillion times and I'll say it another gajillion times: Geddy is a MONSTER bassist. If I had a tenth of the skill he has I'd be great.

+ one billion that this is one of the best stories ever!

And I LOVE the new meet & greet photo with Alex and Geddy - - so very cool!!!!

I saw a show on this tour and completely agree that the band is in fine form. Excellent performance and I really loved the opening film segments that kicked off both sets. As a bass worshiper, I was stoked to see Geddy mostly on the four-string and not so much on the keys.

I also just saw the Beyond the Lighted Stage DVD and thought it was great - - outside of Neil's books, I'd never gotten much insight into their personal lives & history... Well worth watching, if even only to review their oh-so-fashionable hair styles. . .

Paul & Co.,

It's easy to forget just how good these guys are until you see them in action. All three of them are virtuosos, and their on-the-fly musical chemistry can be breathtaking. I found myself shaking my head in awe and disbelief many times during the show.

I met with Neil for half an hour or so on his tour bus before the show--it was a good reunion. He showed us pictures of his 1-year-old daughter, and we heard all the latest motorcycling adventures (while Michael MapSourced out their route from Nashville to Tulsa for the following 2 days).

Surprisingly, when we left the bus when it was time for Neil to get ready for the show, we found a small group of fans outside, and one of them said, "Hey, I know you--you're Rick Foster, the guy who wrote the story about motorcycling with Neil Peart!" He then wanted his picture taken with me, and then so did his brother, etc. Such fun.

I told Geddy and Alex that I wanted them to really rock out on "Red Barchetta," and they did. Alex was quite a sport and even saluted me in the audience toward the end of the song, which, naturally, made my day even further.

Every time they do a tour, I'm afraid it might be their last, given how much work it is. But they actually seem to enjoy it, and, as Neil has said, they also feel an obligation to keep playing "because they can."

Rick

PS: I thought the videos were lots of fun, too. Did you notice that the post-show video featured the two stars from "I Love You Man"?

Great to see this thread continue!

I recently saw a program on the Palladium Hi-Def channel called "Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage" on the history of Rush told by Alex, Geddy and "the new guy" Neil (now I finally get that joke ;)) I cannot recommend it enough, they visit with the parents, go to the first place they played, show (and laugh at) high school pictures, and on - it is a very thorough documentary that will hold you to the last second. Next showing is this Saturday at noon.

Ted,

Wow, thanks for the head's-up on this show. I've heard about it, and wanted to see it, and--thanks to you--now I will!

Thanks for an amazing story Rick - on so many levels!

Rush helped keep me from going insane during my teenage years in the '70's(!) and to find out that Neil is a die-hard biker is a such a good surprise but I had always hoped for the best.

I saw Rush in the UK twice and still follow them to this day but because of this article, I''l be investing in some of Neil's books and a lot more surfing of Neil's and the Guy's websites.

One of the reasons I followed this topic through (and I never realised 'Moving Pictures' was Rush's best selling album so far either) is Red Barchetta. I've been stunned that ever since the album came out, I've had the WRONG impression of the ending of the song/story. Its all because I thought the crital line was "At the one lane bridge I leave the GIANT stranded...) - I took this to mean the 'hero' left the Red Barchetta at the bridge as it couldnt negotiate it and the bitter sweet ending was that he escaped but had to leave the cherished car behind.

I was over joyed to find out how wrong I was - silly I know - I should read better!

I'll keep an eye on this thread for more great photo's too. I'm afraid I cant make too many helpful BMW replies - I did have a 60/7 and an R100Rs in the very distant past, I toured France on the Rs and still regard it as a great design - I have a feeling I might make it onto a GS one day but have too many bikes on my shopping list to ride yet :D

Thanks again Gents - What a ride !

Regards - Frank

Frank,

Welcome to the U.S. BMWBMW club! I'm glad you liked the report of my ride with Neil--it was, indeed, quite an adventure.

Keep thinking about that GS--it's a great bike.

I know this is a BMW message board. But I do ride on a Honda VTX1100 Shadow Sabre. But why I am here is because I found this searching for "RUSH" stuff to read. I heard about how Neil took his inspiration from Ricks article about "A Nice Morning Drive" for Red Barchetta. And here I am. I am also jealous of your ride Rick with Neil. I have been a RUSH FAN since 1976 when I first heard 2112. And from then on, well you know the story of all RUSH FANS. The article was a nice read and sounds like it was a real blast. My real name is Jim I use Bytor1958 for a alot of screen names on forums. RUSH FOR EVER!!!!!

Great Post, By-Tor, its how I found this site too.....

I've got my front row ticket to see RUSH in the UK once again soon - CANT WAIT !!!

Look up Neil's books, if you get chance - I've read two already and really enjoyed his writing style and insights - being a Rush fan is even more of a help as you can see where some song lyric influences were based.
