No, Not That Koup

This Coup

I came across this at a house next to a historic mill on Old Auburn Road just east of
Warrington. Next to the mill, now home to an architectural office was an old wooden frame
clap board-sided house being renovated and I have since ridden by to watch its progress.
I was hoping that they would maintain much of its original design, including wooden
siding, but on my last visit I saw they had decided to use modern vinyl siding,
in a really yucky orange to boot, so I won't be taking any more pictures of it!
Anyway, when I dropped by this past Sunday, the owner was sitting on the front porch
and as he saw me taking pictures of the old barn/workhouse next to his and of the "coup"
on wheels, he informed me he was planning on using it as chicken coup.

As I rode off I thought, "You know, if he put some pigs in it and some antenna on
top, he'd have a mobile ham shack!" since to me it looks like a shed/shack
more than a coup, or Koup! Ha Ha!

So here are the rest of the pics I took of old barns/houses on the ride around the back side of the
Marine base near my home.

At one point I came to an open area and off in the distance I saw this, at first I thought it was some
sort of commercial building, but on closer inspection, it turned out to be a residence, what an ugly, pretentious mess!
(I have thing against copy-cat designs that are ill-fitting to their environment and are designed with total disregard to the same.)
As F.L. Wright once said, ( i paraphrase here) Style is not what one should start with, but rather it should come about as a result (or be the end result) of the design.

RM,

Very cool! That's one of the most lopsided houses I've ever seen--it almost makes you think they it was built that crooked.

Did the owner happen to say what the mobile shed/shack/coup had been originally? Maybe the world's first pop-up/fall-down camping trailer??

Thanks for posting.

Rick

RM--I LOVE the door picture. You and Rick are the best. Thanks for the wonderful old house and barn pictures.

Tanks, by the way I meant tell you about that one its the Tucker County Courthouse clock tower in Parsons WV. Built in1898. I did a write up on the creation of it using a vertical panorama of two shots in the impressions section some time ago. And the other unlabled pano is of Alexandria looking toward DC taken from Van Dorn street access ramp next to where Van dorn goes under the beltway as seen here http://g.co/maps/rcc64 the ramp to right is the actual location of the shot. used to go that way when I worked in Huntington and stopped early one morning on the way in during a brisk winter day with a really clear sky.

glad you enjoyed them!

Tanks!

years ago there was a clap board sided house in Geo Town DC that had a similar "wave" in the siding on the long side of the house, a good foot from peak to peak and the windows were equally cockeyed and the floor of the second level I imagine was as well. Even stranger was that it was obviously still being lived in! I used imagine what it would be like to live in it and if the people walked around with a sort up and down movement like when you leave a ship after several days and try to compensate for deck movement only to discover solid ground does not roll like on ship board! Then in New Orleans in 2006 I found this on the street that the street car named Desire ran down (yes there really was a Street Car Named Desire!).
It inspired the poem included.

It really was that slanted, check out the way the door bottom is cut, and it, too, was obviously occupied!

Image

Slightly Askew

Slightly askew
Without meaning to,
In a structure
Touched by Time.
A slanted facade
That seemed rather odd,
As I happened upon it
One day.
Thus this picture I took
So intrigued by the look,
I present it here now
Just for you.
Its no optical trick
(I’m just not that slick!),
It exists
As you see it right here.

Its for you to decide,
If the people inside,
Walk about with a slanted stride!

RM,

Very nice! I must admit, however, that when I saw the "Slightly Askew" title of your poem, I assumed it would be about you!

Yes, well, had it been about me, the word "slightly" would not have been included!
