Dirt route for GS Riders

Postby Janitor » Mon Nov 07, 2011 7:31 pm

My wife and I have used our GPS to build a custom route consisting of many dirt roads to make a fun ride for the GS crowd. The ride starts in Prince William County then Fauquier County and Loudon County. Start to end at our place is about 125 miles.

It also has a nice water crossing on Jeb Stuart Road near Purcellville.

Here is Shannon charging through.

Then myself, notice the Jeep SUV that got stuck. He failed to check the water depth first and put in a deep hole. I crossed it three times to get a feel for it, the driver did not appreciate a motorcycle succeeding, where a 4 wheel drive could not.

Later on Bull Run Mountain Road, while going quite slow I drifted into some deep gravel, started fishtailing and then went down (my first). No harm to man or machine, so I carried on.

Of course this picture was staged. Shannon was leading this section, and missed my wipeout. She came back for me to see what was taking and by that time I already had the bike back up.

Back home in one piece, tired and happy.

Thinking about organizing a group ride, or if you would like, PM me and I can send you the custom route.

Ride well,
Greg

Good job... I took the path the jeep took several years ago... as I wrote back at the time "I knew I was in trouble when the beak went underwater." Didn't drop it but had to pull both spark plugs and drain the heads. Not my best moment.

Loudoun Co has miles and miles of great gravel to get lost on. Thx for the pics.

Thanks MrE. Your photos are perfect and your depth lines are exactly what we saw. Fortunately, having listened to people with experience (such as yourself), we got out and actually walked out in the water to ensure we could see the depth all the way across (and we saw your hole - BIG, as is apparent by the sunk SUV in our pictures). Glad you made it across safely with no damage!

NIce! Nothing like getting dirty with one's spouse. :-)

I'd be up for a group ride and would also like a copy of the route if it's not too much trouble.

Thanks,
Kermit

Mike's thread was one of the best all time posts. I was thinking about it the other day and chuckled again.

Greg and Shannon,

looks like you two had a good time. I've done some of the gravel up in the Loudon area but have never hit the water crossing at Jeb Stuart... though I've heard of it plenty. And the advice I've heard is the same as the advice you gave, which is, "go left." (Apparently no one ever crosses the creek from the opposite direction... must be unidirectional only) Next time you guys go out I'd like to join you.

We have even done a bit more tweaking on the route, and got 1 more dirt road near the start, hope to organize a group ride in the near future.

Greg,

Wow, looks like a terrific route. I must say, however, that 125 miles on dirt (and through water) in one day sounds like quite an accomplishment! At my usual dirt pace, it would take me about 6 hours. Professor Enloe, of course, could cut that by at least half...

Thanks for posting the report, and good luck as you search for further add-on's to the route.

Rick

It is 125 miles in total but just less than half is dirt, it is linked by mostly paved roads. And ridden at a moderate pace, it's not too bad. We did pick up the pace last time through and I practiced my water crossings a few times and went down in thick gravel (all my fault there  ), so I did come home tired.

It's a fun ride, and not too demanding for the most part.
