I grew up in Clifton Forge, only 6 miles from Douthat State Park and spent many summer days there. We have a photo of my mother standing on the abutmnet over looking the dam, it was taken in the 30's. My father actually helped build the park in the 30's while in the CCC.

Talk about "small world" redux! Your Dad helped build Douthat State Park--how cool is that?

I wanted to swing by Clifton Forge and see what interesting historic stuff might be there, but I ran out of time. As it was, I started the trip at 6:00 AM and didn't get home until 9:30 PM. (I could have made it in a couple of hours if I hadn't made so many photo stops...)

Mt Solon, VA and Natural Chimneys! WAaaay back when I was a young Girl Scout, I spent two summers at Camp May Flather, not far from Mt Solon. I have such wonderful memories of that! Our unit rode well worn, but serviceable, camp bicycles - one speeds all - to Natural Chimneys to explore. What an adventure!

Neat! I found a picture of Camp May Flather, although I couldn't find any information about who May Flather herself was. A pioneering Girl Scout, perhaps? Anyway, which one of the bathing beauties is you??
