SS1000 Check - BB1500 Check Check

Postby BMWGirl » Sun Nov 08, 2009 5:29 pm

Yup, just got home from doing a Bun Burner 1500!! I rode 1631 miles in 35 hours! It was cold, amazing, fun and OMG, COLD! Talking to a friend a bit last week about the ride and getting some tips and decided to just do it. 1500miles in 36 hours, eh, fairly easy, 1500miles in 24 hours, ummm not so much! I started out thinking I would try the BBG (Bun Burner Gold - 1500mi. in 24 hours). I haven't ridden hardly at all since July so I'm not sure What I was thinking??!!!

I sent the "Club Whiner" a PM and suckered him in to riding with me (almost had his wife going too, but Mia wised up at the last minute!)

So, I left the house at 4am, met up with Blake and rode to Tuscaloosa, AL and home again. Our coldest temp was 26 degrees yesterday morning at 5am'ish? and warmest was today around 76 (I think). We had a really nice ride, but I was way out of practice for this kind of riding and this was Blakes first endurance ride (He may not be so quick to say yes, the next time I PM him! )

We had fun and I'm really glad I did it! I was wondering if the physical therapy was helping and it is but I still need some work done. The accident hurt me more than I thought. :(

Oh well..... We'll do better next time! Right, Blake! [-o< BTW, Congrats to Blake - He succeeded in his FIRST endurance ride - the Bun Burner as well - 1500+ miles! =D> =D>

Great show of endurance Tina. Glad to see you're well enough to be tackling this. Impressive.

I didn't even know there was a BB 1500.

I've done that a few times, two 7-800 mile days back to back, if you figure starting at 7, and ending at 7 the next day. You can even get in a good night's sleep.

That's right, Jim. For someone who wants to get their feet wet but feels overwhelmed by the SS, the BB is a really good option!

The BBG, like Tina said, is a whole different animal!

Congrats Tina and Whiner!

The 4 a.m. part is what always stops me.

Congratulations on completing a BB 1500. Did you document it so you can get credit?

Per the rules here:
http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/getdocument.cfm?DocID=1

I wrote mileage and times on a log sheet for the entire trip. After reading the rules, I feel confident that I will indeed be credited with a SS1000 and a BB1500.

As mentioned, the BBG (1500 in 24) is a bit more technical. The experience this past weekend showed me that a bit better time management would have given us the chance of a BBG. As it stood, everything considered based on time/distance, we were going to miss the BBG by about 30 or so minutes if we kept the same pace. Retrospect shows that 20 couple degrees is really too cold to start (it was 23F at home when I left at 0430). I do not think we saw constant temps above 35 until way past 9 am. Then all the way up to 75F and then back down to 34F and back up to 75F was just too much on the body (I started to get really tight as the temps began to drop past 40 for the second time in 24 hours). I think with longer daylight, warmer temps and a 20 or so degree variance it would be better. That is my plan for the next attempt, probably in the spring.

For the record, yes, it was my "first" documented distance run, but it is not unheard of for me to do an 800 to 1000 mile day on some trips...

All-in-all, it was a good trip, we were safe, we learned and we enjoyed it.
