Jim and Kermit's Big Adventure (well, big to us)

Tell Us About Your Rides!

Postby ERC Scott » Thu Jul 10, 2008 8:46 am

When in the Black Hills you might want to check out Wind Cave. Both the park and the cave itself. Since ya'll are rugged GS riders, sign up to take the spelunking tour of Wind Cave. If you've never done any caving before, it's a great adventure, and one you'll never forget. In SD if you ride thru any roads on the Rez (Rosebud, etc.), be prepared for some depressing sights. On a brighter note, the Badlands offer vistas you likely never have experienced before. And a close up view from the saddle of a bison (let alone a herd) is indescribable. Buen viaje, amigos. Scott

Same here 1st time I setup the Spot stuff. I'll get the family hooked up if you like, PM me.

Happy Motoring guys.

Thanks for the offer. I've got it all set-up, but never one to leave well enough alone Jim and I have got a little fancy/crazy with several different map groups, various map configurations and different message groups.
Not too difficult but it does need some management. Thus the "job" rant.

It should all be fine when we hit the road.

Looks like I got a head start on you guys. I left this morning about 5AM. Did my 500 for the day and decided to nix the campground outside of Toledo in favor of a Super 8 in Toledo. I really shocked myself doing my first 500 mile day. There was lot of trepidation at first, then I just cranked the throttle and rode. Stopped a total of 4 times along the way and made it here by 3:30pm. Sorry guys, no pictures yet. I slabbed it the whole way, and saw nothing worth photographing. I can't wait to get away from these damn cities. Traffic hasn't been bad at all. Smooth flowing the entire time and no traffic jams. I'll probably check out early and try to beat the rush again. I'll try to start another thread tomorrow, and take and post some photos.

Just a few hours before we go, and boy do I need a vacation!!!!

Here is a map of out possible route:

Image

I say "possible" because it might be that we decide to venture off in other directions based on whim and weather, time and just how much fun we are having!

Thanks for all the well wishes!

Your map shows you crossing the Mississippi on I-74. That puts you in my home town of Bettendorf Iowa. You MUST stop at Russ' Diner, which is in the literal shadow of the I-74 bridge and across the street from the church where I was married. The food at Ross' is GREAT road food; it's an institution in the area, although Ross is long deceased, I think it is still managed by his family.
And if you have any interest in the history of American industry and agricultural machinery, stop in Moline IL (just before crossing into Iowa) at the John Deere corporate HQ - they have a wonderful museum of historic tractors & farm implements. Pretty boring if you're not into machinery, but I suspect you do have such an interest. Scott

Oh, yeah, forgot to say that you might want to ride north in Iowa on US Rte 61, the old "Blues Highway" that figured into Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited. The road parallels the river for much of its run. It's a pretty historic road and featured in many folk blues songs. Scott

God says. "Out on Highway 61".

For those interested, you can click here to see where we are within 10 minutes. Please don't click it repeatedly because it has a 500 hit limit before Kermit has to replace it.

You wont see anything until tomorrow, so please wait to click on it.

Failed Laptop

Postby R1200ST » Fri Jul 11, 2008 5:26 pm

Kermit,

Rough start :( If you need connectivity at the rally I am bringing a loaner laptop and I begged/borrowed/stole one of the Sprint data cards, so if there is cell coverage Jim will not need to upload his 10 megapixle images on the shared wifi at the rally.

Am also hoping to pick up a 3G iPhone today, since it has Geotagging of images and I broke another camera, I think its the way to go. I had looked at the spot when I saw it on Jims list of things you guys are traveling with, if I can post from the new iPhone it at least fills the function of letting people know I am still OK. What it does not help with however is the calling for help.

I am posting to http://baptacular.com/wordpress/, if you would like me to add you a page just let me know.

Of course if you already left, you won't see any of this, so I can fill you in over a beer in Gillette.

Ride safe to both of you, and anyone else who is making the trek.

Brian

In retrospect, I think a posting ID of Bapper would have made more sense then R1200ST. We live and learn :)

It was unpleasant at my house last night and now I'm feeling bad about being an ass around my family. I think I need a vacation.
