I believe it'd be things like the regularly scheduled breakfast rides, BMWBMW poker runs, and anything else the rides committee (Ed Phelps) arranges.

Hmm... I was thinking sanctioned was a formal group ride where you are signing a waiver stating the club is not responsible if you get hurt and that you're doing this of you own free will. The Moonlight Poker run was like this. The breakfast rides are not.

To get back to the original question, though, I don't think any of the rides are out of anyone's league except possibly distance covered. I think everyone rides with, um... spirit. Some just have more spirit in their right hands than others.

You can never get in over your head if you observe rule #1 as Jeff put it:

Nautrally good advice. In my experience, peer pressure plays a big role in the fun runs.

When we do breakfast rides, as an example, we often break up into different groups based on the rider's preference.

We try to make it clear what our riding style is like, but it really is up to the rider to make an intelligent decision.

I prefer not to ride spiritedly with anyone I haven't riden with at least at an average pace before.

VaSteve

I'm a "new" rider and 've only been on 2 rides with folks from BMWBMW. Both were at a very comfortable pace and I had a great time. I may have dropped back a little a few times but never enough to look like the group was splitting. Folks were VERY considerate of my lesser skills.

I had a GREAT time and the folks were delightful.

Try it!

VASteve: +1 on the Graybeard comment. The informal BMWBMW rides are very manageable. If I want to take it easy in any group, I ride in the back. Usually the group stays together pretty well and if needed, we can wait at the next safe stop. BTW Graybear, RM, JVB, Tina (just to mention a few) can ride fast but can also cruise when they want to... :)

In the MSF-type group ride the leader has the other bikes to think about when making pass. The hand signal is usually passed down the line by each rider. I'd recommend to practice this type of riding by brushing up on the hand signals and group riding style with experienced people before jumping in. I have only done spirited rides in a group with which I have ridden with often and can "read" well.

My very first group ride was last year's Rolling Thunder from Gaithersburg to the Pentagon. Just me and a few hundred of my closest friends.
