Presidents Ride 2019

Postby jcabiles » Mon Apr 01, 2019 12:18 pm

If you like history and riding, then this ride is for you.

Virginia is rich in history starting from our Colonial beginnings, war for independence, Civil War to present day. Did you also know that eight presidents were born in Virginia; three just East of Fredericksburg, two SE of Richmond and three in the vicinity of Charlottesville.

Below is the list Of Presidents and their birthplaces grouped into two parts. Part 1 in April and Part 2 in May.

Part 1
James Monroe 4460 James Monroe Hwy, Colonial Beach
George Washington 1732 Popes Head Rd, Colonial Beach
James Madison 17200 James Madison Pkw
John Tyler 10920 John Tyler Memorial Hwy, Charles City County
William Henry Harrison 12602 Harrison Landing Rd, Charles City County

Part 2
Woodrow Wilson 20 N Coalter St, Staunton
Thomas Jefferson 2450 Richmond Rd, Charlottesville
Zachary Taylor 7350 Spotswood Trail, Barboursville

The planned routes will primarily stay off the interstates as much as possible and take scenic back roads.

Each day would be a full day of riding to include breaks and photo ops. Some of the sites are now private residences and/or only a historical marker.

Part 1 is Saturday April 27. Go to the BMWBMW Meet Up Site and sign up.

A later post(s) will include mileage and a route list.

Attached are the route sheets for this ride. I currently use an old model Magellan this is an old school method with left and right directions and mileage.

From what itis worth department: I had the opportunity to ride the southern route of this ride and it was very enjoyable. Very easy riding and wonderful Va scenery. For the record we slabbed it back just because we were trying to make it to an open house Any hoots great ride...

I put together 3 GPX files for this day's routes.

In order to upload them to the forum I had to rename them to pdf files. After you download them rename them back to gpx and import them into your GPS or phone.

Unfortunately I won't be able to join the ride as I have another engagement that day, but I look forward to hearing about it.

Thanks for sending Jerry, but I tried that but was unsuccessful - unable to open in Base Camp or Map Source after renaming to gpx. :(

I had trouble opening the file. It seemed to be split into two parts. I edited the route, changed the forum rules to allow GPX files, and attached to this post. Tell me if it works for you.

I just tried downloading them and opened them in Basecamp with no problem.

What I did was right click the link in my browser, then selected "save as" and the destination folder, changed the extension type of the file from pdf to gpx and clicked save.

I have also uploaded the files to this directory on my domain:

https://skene.org/gps2019/

You can download the gpx files from there:

What a fantastic day for a ride. We had five riders (Randy, Phoebe, Mark, Markus and Jose), and due to time constraints we only visited three of the birthplaces east of Fredericksburg. Three riders did continue on south to West Point and had a great ride on the sweepers on Route 14 at speed.

We also had a brief tour of Belle Grove Plantation (James Madison) prior to an Afternoon Tea soire’.

Check out some of the photos from the ride posted to our Meet Up site.

P.S. Thanks to Bruce Dimon for creating the gpx files for the ride. Everything matched up with my Left/Right sheet with the exception of a couple unintended U Turns, which we ignored.

I was hoping to go on this ride, but I went by the Facebook event, which said it started at 10AM, so I ended up arriving too late. Luckily several others made the same mistake, and 4 of us ended up taking a nice ride down to the Montpelier estate, followed by a trip down by Lake Anna before we all headed home. The weather was too good not to go somewhere!
