Dec 4, 2015 ride is in the books! Oldtown, MD _PawPaw WV Runabout
(overview map and info here https://trips.furkot.com/ts/q9HbnN )

It was 40 degrees when Scott and I met for breakfast at the Old Town Diner in Myersville, Md.

We headed out on the super slab to pick up rustic Rt 40 in Hancock, Md,

Before long, we left the twisty tarmac for some ‘gentlemanly off-road’ in MD’s Greenbriar Forest.

We took the switchbacks up to Green Ridge Rd, standing on the pegs at times, more for the fun of it, than for need (lot's of roads to explore up there in the forest). This ridge rd traverses south along a narrow scenic ridge through the forest until meeting up with Pack Mule Rd for a few more switch backs down to Rt 51.

Next was lunch in Oldtown, Md at the School House Kitchen (it really is the old school cafeteria with a antique car restoration business in back http://www.yelp.com/biz/schoolhouse-kitchen-oldtown ). Good food, cheap and lot's of room for lots of rider for future trips (check the hours to be sure they're open).

After lunch we’re off to WV via crossing the OldTown Toll Bridge (http://www.oldtownbridge.com/) which costs $.50 to cross a narrow portion of the Potomac River (this is getting closer to the headwaters - look up Fairfax Stone) and on to Greensprings WV where we began our loop back on rustic WV backroads.

Springfield Rd and Spring Gap Rd twist and turn and finally blend into the back streets of PawPaw WV.

After a brief rest, we headed up the twisty Rt 9 for Berkley Springs to catch Rt 544 back to Hancock and home.

It turned into an all day outing with good eats, riding and macho discussions.

Thanks for joining me Scott.

A very bracing ride it was :) A good mix of twisty asphalt and hard-pan. The park road could be handled by bikes with street tires (just dial your pace back a little) or stand on the pegs, dial on the throttle, and let the rear slide a little ;) Spent most of the ride in 2nd, 3rd, & 4th gears getting 35 mpg on the ADV -- so you know we were having some fun!

A superb ride Ed; thanks for setting this up! I'll see if I can clear the calendar for the next Friday ride. Scott

And indeed it was...

With riding buddy Scott, we enjoyed another ‘mental health’ day December 11th Friday ride. After a fine breakfast at the Old Town Diner, Myersville, Md we headed up to Michaux State Forest. The 40 degree morning temps climbed into the low 60’s with slightly overcast skies but an overall great December day for a ride.

Great riding whether you like paved curves or forest service roads so both sport tourers and GS riders will be happy. We enjoyed a little bit of both, Scott on his R1200RS LC, and me on the R1200GS LC.

Here’s a few shots up on Ridge Road which runs the spine of the forest with a labyrinth of forest service, gap and run roads, and off-road trails to be explored in the future.

An overview of the route is here https://trips.furkot.com/ts/mFleuG

We ended up stopping for lunch at CJ’s Bar and Grill in Shippensburg, PA which is highly recommended for a RTE also – lots to choose from on the menu but the crab cakes and cod fish and chips were outstanding!.

After lunch, we slabbed back, me to the dealer for a warranty replacement brake fluid cover and Scott to home for some honey-do’s…

Hoping next Friday is another great ride day! Rider's welcome!

After my delicious Avocado Eggs Benedict, (sorry, only pic)

I spent the next several hours NE of Myersville up around South Mountain towards Cavetown and then around SW down to Mt Aetna crossing 40 and Alt40 winding my way over to Keedysville and Pottstown on Burnside Bridge Rd among others and on to Gapland/Burkittsville... Heated gear working great. Off today to register for Bob's Polar Bear challenge...
See you out on the roads!
