Alaska/Yukon

Postby TravellingTartar » Sat Apr 11, 2015 5:52 pm

Nice seeing you all today at Battley's.

As agreed, here's a callout for anyone who's maybe crazy enough to join a 12,000 mile ride 43 days before departure

May 25, the day after Rolling Thunder, I leave DC for Inuvik (NWT above the arctic circle) via Pueblo (CO), Utah, Alberta, BC, up to Fairbanks, back down to Anchorage, switch tires, up through Tok onto the Taylor (Top of the World), through Dawson and up to top of the Dempster. Then I turn around and take the shortest route back to DC. I have to be back by July 4 latest.

If anyone is mildly interested, I'll give you more details otherwise, follow along... I'll post the ride in the rides forum.

BTW, I'll be getting to Inuvik on, or a couple of days before, the Solstice; pretty cool.

Sounds like a blast.

If you need a recommendation for a stay in Tok, let me know, and post lots of photos!

Hi Jim.
That would be good; I plan on staying in Tok twice, once on my way up to Fairbanks and four or five days later just before hitting the Taylor. FYI, I'm camping mostly. I will probably do a hotel in Anchorage to freshen up before hitting the trail and again in Whitehorse on the way back down to remove a first layer of grime from the Dempster

If you happen to see Trooper Wells around Tok, give him my regards.

If camping is the norm, then you might consider getting in touch with the HD dealer in Anchorage. When I was there a number of years ago, they welcomed motorcycle travelers to camp on their lawn. And what's more, they have a bathroom with a shower that campers can use. Seems to be a great place to rest, clean up, make a few repairs and meet some like-minded people! Call ahead and ask to make sure camping is still an option - - and ask for the key-code to the bathroom so you know it in case you arrive after business hours.

I leave tomorrow

Postby TravellingTartar » Thu May 14, 2015 8:24 pm

I'm off. I leave bright and early tomorrow morning (15 May). Back by end of June. I'll post updates and links to my RR as I move along. In the meantime, I have attached the most current map of the journey.

It's a little early for a 2016 callout, but considering I was unsuccessful for this year, I figured I would try early.

So, here's the deal. This year I made it as far as Whitehorse before having to come home for a variety of reasons. So, I did not make it to Inuvik as planned. I'd like to go for it again next year - 2016. I'm not sure about the dates yet. Maybe June to be in Dawson City for D2D or maybe July/August after my annual business trip to France in early July.

Anyone remotely interested? I'll post more details as we get closer to the date, but if anyone is interested in a DC to Inuvik trip next summer, I'd love to hear from you, meet up, talk about it and, who knows, maybe ride together! Hey, maybe there will be more than two of us??

Too bad you had to cut it short, but hey, that's still a darn good ride!

Quick edit to the project: 2016 will be the 25th anniversary of D2D in Dawson City so it promises to be a big event. Lots of people planning the trip. It would be awesome to find a few from our club interested in riding up!!
