Ride to Hell

Postby streetdoc on Fri Jan 08, 2010 8:54 pm

This spring or summer after its not frozen over, we should do a IBA SaddleSore ride to Hell and back.
Image My mapping software puts the one distance from Burke to Hell as 547 miles

From their web site; The History of Hell Michigan

Hell was first settled in 1838 by George Reeves and his family. George had a wife and 7 daughters – no reason to call it Hell yet… George built a mill and a general store on the banks of a river that is now known as Hell Creek...
The mill would grind the local farmers grain into flour; George also ran a whiskey still, so a lot of times the first 7-10 bushels of grain became moonshine.
In turn, horses would come home without riders, wagons without drivers….someone would say to the wife, where is your husband?
She’d shrug her shoulders, throw up her arms and exclaim, Ahh, he’s gone to Hell!”
In 1841 when the State of Michigan came by, and asked George what he wanted to name his town, he replied, “Call it Hell for all I care, everyone else does.” So the official date of becoming Hell was October 13, 1841...

So, do you wanna know even more about Hell? Okay, you asked for it... http://www.hell2u.com/more_hell.htm

Woke up this morning and checked all my body parts and they were intact...
Checked my car and it started and ran with no problem...
Checked my bike and it worked just fine...
I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop... Sounds like hell's frozen over blues...

I like the thought. A ride to Hell and Back! We can all say that we went to Hell and back or I just got back from Hell. I was just in Hell. That was a Hell of a ride  The jokes just keep on coming. Let me know if you plan on doing this. I might be up for it.

I have looked at my shift work schedule and have several weekends available to make this ride more compatable to those who have a regular work week; May 22/23, Jun 19/20, Jul 24/25, and Aug 21/22. I have a lot of weekdays that would work also.
It boils down to I am going to Hell this year!

I want a bunch of their T-shirts:

Here is a link to Google Maps that shows a tentative route for the ride to Hell for our shirt and souvenir collection. Its my understanding that it is fairly easy to get out of Hell. But be warned, do not click your heels, that will send you straight to Kansas

My GPS Routing puts it at 1,095 miles and 17.5 hours (non-stop). For those that are interested in getting an IBA SaddleSore out of this ride you could stop along the route in Pennsylvania or Maryland once you have completed the thousand miles plus a little buffer and get your end of ride witness endorsements. This shouldn't be a difficult ride to complete as either a SaddleSore or a casual shopping ride.

Maybe BMWBMW can host an Annual Ride to Hell ..... Oh Tina, have we got an idea for you!

I'm very interested in this ride, although the 17.5 hours nonstop does make me go hmmm. But what the Hell !
I bought this BMW for more than just running up to the store and getting milk.

Well that didn't take long - I'm out. There's about 5 different things going on that weekend, I'm already torn about. I can't add another event.

I hope you guys have a great time! Take pics!!

Tina if you really want to do this ride we have dates to chose from also, May 22/23, Jun 19/20, Jul 24/25, and Aug 21/22. I originally selected these dates to chose from since they were on the only true weekends that I am off to make it so i could ride with the people that work normal Mon-Fri jobs. Rather than designating the June date lets see who actually wants to go on this ride. Then we can run a poll of those riders to see what dates work best for them. So for now, lets unselect the June date and see what we come up with. With my Fire Dept schedule I have a bunch of weekday periods that would work for me if that would be better for those that want to go also.

Hey Dave - are these dates you are picking? Anyone can do this ride at any time, correct?? Or did I miss something? Just curious!
