Little Trip to the Beaches - (now with pictures 9/13)

Postby streetdoc » Thu Sep 03, 2009 5:18 am

As you may or may not know I am attempting to do an Iron Butt Assoc. Coast to Coast in 50 Hours Motorcycle Ride starting today. The route that I have planned will take me from my home in Orange and the start point for a Saddlesore 3000, from there I am riding to the official start point of the 50CC at Onslow Beach, Camp LeJenue, NC and then to the finish line of Del Mar Beach, Camp Pendleton, CA. If you would like to see my planned route, this link should take you to Google Maps where my planned route is located:

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie ... 513672&z=4

I purchased a SPOT GPS Messenger so my wife can following along and see where I am at even if I don't have cell phone coverage. The SPOT is a neat little gadget that lets me send preformatted messages as long as I have satellite coverage. To send the messages I just have to push any one of three buttons and they send out 1) I'm OK, 2) I need help, and, 3) I have an emergency. The messages include with my exact GPS Location. There is also a Tracking feature that I can turn on so every 10 to 15 minutes my current location is sent out so any that wants to can see where I am at, this feature needs to be reactivated every 24 hours.

After I complete the Coast to Coast portion of the trip I am going to take a couple of days to rest and visit family and friends in California before I make my way back to Virginia. If you are interested in following along as I make my trip here several links to web sites where you can watch my progress.

Once I get back and have computer access again I'll post up pictures of the trip.

I'm back, safe and sound. I'll post pictures and write up the story for the trip after some much needed rest.

On Sept 3rd I started my IBA 50CC and Saddlesore 3000 ride plus a quick visit with family, friends and the return ride home. Since I am a retired Marine I wanted to use the beaches at Camp Lejeune and Camp Pendleton as my start and end points. I also included riding mileage from my home to get to Camp Lejeune plus mileage to a friend's home by Camp Pendleton so I could earn a Saddlesore 3000, no since in wasting riding miles :mrgreen: The mileage and times for this trip by GPS Log are 1) 50CC: 2,678 miles in 45:24, 2) Saddlesore 3000: 3,124 miles in 55:34 and 3) Total Trip: 6,562 miles in 9days, 4hrs, 45minutes or 220hrs 45min. This was done on a 1999 BMW R1100RS. I wont do a trip like this again on a RS, I need to sit more upright (anybody want an RS?). I also collected approximately 94,000 feet in elevation pictures and pass up on at least 50,000 feet because to was either during the timed portion of the ride or there was no safe place to park and take a picture.

Here are some of the pictures that I took as part of my ride;

Onslow Beach, Camp Lejeune, NC

A little fishing boat that I would like to get for Lake Anna :mrgreen:

I saw this while getting gas at the Topaz Lake Lodge, NV, It applies to both Marines and any IBA ride that you do.
