Bear Town WV, the Long way....

Postby RocketMan » Tue Apr 28, 2009 9:02 am

I'm thinking in the next few weeks of heading back down to BearTown State Park to see if its been reopened.
Say mid May. The last time I went there (2 years ago or so) it was closed due to damage to the walkways. But even if its still closed Droop Mt. battlefield park and the Highland Scenic Highway is near by.
Most likely take the airhead, so it would be a lazier style ride.

Here's the basic route plan with two options for the return trip.

55 to Moorefield then Petersburg to Seneca Rocks then 55/33 to 219 south on 219 to Mill point then on to Droop Mountain and Beartown.

From there south to Frankford then east on Anthony Station Rd to Rt. 92. North on 92 to 39/92 keep going north past Green bank then 28 north to 33 and Seneca Rocks then 55 and home.

Or from Droop go back to Mill point and take 39/150/55 west to Richwood (this is the Highland Scenic Highway with an elevation of 4500 feet at its hightest point)

then from Fenwick north 55/20/150 to north 20 to Webster Springs and east on 15 to 250 east to Thornwood to north 28 to Senaca rocks and home.

Meet at the Sheetz in Haymarket and take 66 to 55 to Moorefield then get off the slab and enjoy the back roads the rest of the way.

this would be an all day event, leaving early getting home by dark.

Sounds like a nice route. I will wait for the date to be announced before making a decision :)

seriously thou .... looking at the weekend of 9th or 16th preferably Saturday, but Sunday would work as well, it all depends on how cooperative the weather is.

Figure on leaving out of Haymarket by 8.

RM: Let us know when we get closer to the first date. The 16th SAT is possible for me. Got my GS back up and ready to go into the twisties. Hope I can keep with the airheads! :D

Rocketman,

I'm a huge fan of all day WV routes so very sorry I won't be able to make it in May as am traveling most weekends for work. I took the liberty of mapping out the (first) route on google maps; you can find it here. Hope folks may find it helpful.

Sorry I can't make it but hope you don't mind if I borrow your route at some point in the next couple of months! :)

Very cool, thanks for map, and as for borrowing My route, better be quick cause I'm in the process of copyrighting it even as I type! Ha Ha!

Yikes! I just looked at the map, 480 miles! Hmmm, may have to modify it a bit for a one day ride, but I know I've made it to Beartown and back in a day easy so....

I'm also looking at some of this for rides to share for those who show up for the Fof SR/WV Un-Rally I host in June. I need to figure out how to do that google track thing and save them.
