2016 Four Winds Rally in PA - Anyone Going?

Postby RocketMan » Sun Jul 24, 2016 2:47 pm

I'm thinking of going to the Four Winds Rally In PA next month (August-2016) dates are the 19th thru 21st rather than going to the Sherando since there is a bit of a scheduling conflict between that and one of Jeanne's events. I went to one a number of years and had a pretty good time, seemed well organised and the city park where it is held seems to have a decent amount of shaded camping. Its not far from Erie PA, a bit south and east, by around 60 or so miles. I'm thinking of heading up on the Thursday to get a good shaded camping spot. Its around 260+ miles taking mostly state highways or slab though I'd probably go the state highway/back roads route. they have vendors, on-site food and Saturday dinner is included in rally price, all other meals are pay your own.
I'm also thinking of taking 2 days to return so as not have to rush packing Sunday and take a more leisurely route back to explore the area and find a nice place to hole up for Sunday night somewhere about 1/2 of the way back.
Be interested in riding up and camping (and perhaps riding back) together if anyone else is planning on going.

Yes, I plan to go. I already put in for that Friday off work. My plan is to leave early Friday morning and return in one day. Save a shady spot for my tent next to yours. I'll bring the club banner.

Kool, my attendance does depend on two factors, 1: if I land a job and can't take the time (though I plan on trying to negotiate it should I get an offer) and 2: if the weather remains as it has been in the 90's and with the kind of humidity we've had of late, I'll most likely bail, but we shall see. I'm thinking of maybe laying over around Ohiopyle PA (gotta love the name!) State Park or try for some place like Martinsburg or Sheaperdstown in WVa on the way home so as not to have leave at the butt-crack of dawn Sunday.

We used to go to that rally, it was fun, but a couple times it was pretty hot. Swing by Apollo, PA on the way up and say a prayer for Jerry, he is buried there.

I just registered for the 4 Winds rally. I will see you there, Rocketman. We will celebrate BMW'S 100th anniversary at this rally's 50th anniversary. Now to plan a route.

Well looks like I won't make it this year, my endless summer is coming to a close as I got a job starting some time in the next two weeks.
I will be at twin valley thou as that was specified as part of my acceptance agreement.

The long range weather forecast looks good. I'm riding up on Friday care to join us?

I'm going to rendezvous with a buddy in Pa. on Thursday night, then ride the back roads to get there. See you there.

I will be there with the R1200 GSA ready for some dirt/gravel roads on Saturday. Looking forward to having some fun in cooler weather.

Well, I left on Saturday morning for a nice riding day home. Didn't want to deal with the forecasted overnight into morning heavy rain. The fairgrounds facilities were pretty run down--way below Camp West Mar standards, and the rally was a little pricey. Probably low on my list for repeat attendance.

Went to this rally. Met Bruce and Maria. The facilities are indeed run down but I enjoyed the spirit. Around 350 attended. I liked that they had five or six rides planned Sat morning with a leader and a sweeper: an ADV extreme with mud and river crossings, a GS ride mostly gravel, a scenic ride, a covered bridges ride and a ride to some event. The covered bridges was good, but rather long (over 3 hrs). Fantastic roads. The barbecue on Sat was awesome. Also enjoyed the excellent presentations. They also had a lot of door prizes. Drove through pouring rain on Sun on my 400 mi ride back. But my BMW gear --rain suit, summer gloves, Santiago boots-- kept me totally dry.
I would go to this rally again.
