Must be time to chime in. Being from Carroll County, MD where the Constitution still rules, D.C. is not yet classified as a state [-X , so they are still MD, VA, WV, PA and even DE (not much bigger than DC). We have a couple of categories for awards, so there is the single state, 5 state and unlimited states. Probably to be the AWSHIDT Grand Champion you will have to travel wide and far (George????).

Since you only score a route number 1 time, the very max number of pictures would be 99, 18 of which would have to be US Highways. The web site referred to in the rules states there is no US55 so I will check out Wikepedia about the conflict. Any route number is okay, so alt, business, rural route, scenic, etc are all fine.

We are close to sending out the numbers. We are having a problem with the iron-on for the nylon towel. It just is not working like we want. If we have to throw in the towel (pun intended) we will revert to the laminated ID's.

More soon.

US Route 55 was decommissioned in 1936, so only if you have a very old picture with a photo shopped ID number in the picture,,, no that would not work. So back to any type of route would be fine

I'll try to get there, unless I decide to go pre-ride some of the self-guided routes for the Spring Fling Rally instead. Thanks, Tina.

AWSHIDT is heating up. Numbers will be appearing all over the country at route signs real soon. So to eliminate any mixed messages about the Grand Tour Champion, we will have the following tie breakers.

1st Tie Breaker
Who has the most US Highway route signs. Note: Between 1 and 99, there are 12 numbers that do not appear on the current list of US Highway routes, 87 that do. These numbers will not count as a US Highways: 28, 32, 37, 38, 39, 47, 55, 66, 86, 88, 94, 99. Scenic designation does not make it a commissioned US Route.

2nd Tie Breaker
Most states documented in collecting the route numbers.

3rd Tie Breaker
Efficiency, who got it done the earliest.

Now I don't know that we are going to need all these tie breakers butt there should be no question this way.

The tie breakers divide the results into two groups, Grand Tour Champion and Other Categories. You can win in one or the other, but not both.

For tiebreaker 2, how will we document the states? US route signs don't say what state they're in.

Tiebreaker 3 turns the Grand Tour Champion category into a race. I just wanta ride around and see stuff all year long, so I'll concede that category to someone else.

So there's a question and my interpretation of how the rules affect the results. Whataya think?

edit: Oh, yeah, got my number today. Nice day for a ride.

Hey George, good questions and answers.

Grand Champion would of course take the participant out of the other catagories and put that person overall as you said. Then of course the 2nd place person in that place would take 1st place and so forth. There is no way someone only riding the five state area or the single state could get all the US Highway signs. So I would say that this would be for someone that wants to travel cross country to obtain all of them. Of course if no one wants to travel out west then we would use the five state and single state catagories for Grand Champion.

As for the question about the most states we will have to check on that. You are supposed to submit a log with your pictures and the states where taken. Maybe we forgot to mention it that way, sorry.

And no, we don't want everyone to run out and hurry. Our objective is to give everyone a chance to enjoy their particular ride. We just thought that as a third and final tie breaker that could be done.

We need to keep the first two tie breakers but would encourage anyone with an idea for a third one, in case we need it, to let us know. We are always open to suggestions to make your ride easier or more fun. Tina mentioned we could use "the person with the most pictures having something purple in it". Any one else?? After all, it is your ride too and we want to be fair. All suggestions are welcome.

Glad you picked a beautiful day to ride up and pick up your number. Boy we had company for the past two days and didn't see a soul. You guys are quiet.

Smartphones can geocache the lat/long of each photo. The Iron Butt Rally will be accepting such photos on bonuses this year to cut down on time the contestant would have otherwise spent at the scoring table.

WinXP can't read that info off the photo, but Win7 can. So, Ed, see if the club will upgrade your computer for the good of the committee.
