Train a noob to mount tires?

Postby otium » Sat Aug 17, 2019 6:01 pm

Any wise wrench willing to train a noob how to mount a tire? I have an '11 RT that needs a new rear tire. I have the tire, but not the skills (or the right tools yet). Not to say I'm inept, I've done complete spline lubes on by R1100R, but I try never to do anything the first time without an expert watching/guiding me and since wheels are safety related I'm particularly paranoid.

Also want to do it myself since I'm shocked how much people want me to pay here. Just came from New England and mounting costs were half what shops near Alexandria are asking. I'm on Ft. Belvoir but will travel since I'm the one asking for the favor.

BLUF: I have the tools and willing to help you change the tire. I would not consider myself as an expert nor am I fast. And, I ride a GSA and don't care about a possible scratch or two that comes changing the tire. I just do it with a few spoons. Oh and I am out west about 1 hour or so from you. Any hoots. let me know... Since you live east maybe JVB would have mercy on you since he lives around there. He is a great teacher.

They specifically won’t allow motorcycle tires. On a good note, Bob’s BMW is about half what everyone else wants to charge so I’m heading up tomorrow morning. Too much going on the next week or two to try to do it myself. Work and family keep you busy.

Still, down the road this is a skill I want to learn.

Did you check price at EUBMW. https://www.eubmw.com/

I didn't think Bob's would change a tire unless you bought the tire from them.

I just checked today.
Bob's BMW charges $42.50 per tire off bike - $53.50 on bike - you need to sign some type of waiver if you bring your own tires to mount.
EUBMW in Alexandria $60 per tire on bike
District Cycle Rockville $110 per tire on bike

They also say they’ll only do it once. Worked this time. Next time I’m due for tires I’ll learn to mount them myself.

You really should check with us at Morton's BMW for tires and mounting. We match or beat most mail order places on tire prices, and our mounting prices are cheaper than the ones you quoted above if you buy the tires from us. Give our parts guys a call (540-891-9844) and see what they can do for you next time.

I may be open to a tire tech day in the next 2-4 weeks. Ship them to my house, change and balance, and take the old ones home.

Cost, $0.00.

I would love to Join this if it happens, let me know.

Need to re-learn mounting and pick Jim's brain on equipment for my new garage.

This is great news Jim - hope this happens. I got new Dunlops for a fantastic price at the MOA this summer, but picked up a 2" nail on the Fairfax Stone Ride. Plug is on the tread so I will want to change this one soon.

Take care,
