I've used one of these and think it worked, but I had my nagging doubts. When I learned to solder, I learned to heat up the connection (wire to wire or wire to circuit board) first and then let the heated material draw the solder and flux core into the joint, bubbling off the flux and making a permanent connection. This method, while it combines mechanical strengthening (a good thing as soldering isn't strong mechanically), I'm worried about how good (and lasting) the electrical connection would be. So if I choose to solder, I do it the old fashioned way and add the shrink tube later. One can also add hot melt glue as extra waterproofing (though be careful not to have the hot melt shrink the tube prematurely -DAMHIK).
Doubtless someone is smarter than me about this.
