Kickstand Switch kills the engine

Postby bdimon » Sun Feb 19, 2017 5:02 pm

My engine stopped at inconvenient times. I would pull over, put it in neutral, and start it back up. Wondered why it stopped. Squeezed the clutch, put it in first gear, and the engine would turn off. Wondered no more. I have had Kickstand trouble on other bikes. Wiggling the kickstand would let me run again.

Today I decide to fix it. I proved that the switch shorted when I wiggled the kickstand. I see that the switch housing is cracked so I clean it up, use a plastic weld to seal the housing, and put it back together. Used my multi-meter to prove that wiggling it no longer has a problem. Great!

Start the bike in neutral, squeeze the clutch, and click into first. Engine stops. Not great.

The switch assembly has a cord that ends in a connector with three wires labeled 1, 2, and 3. The 1 and 2 wires are shorted when the kickstand is down and are open when it is up. I do not know if number 3 wire has any purpose. The receiving socket also has three wires with matching numbers. With the ignition on, there is 12 volts across 1 (negative) and 2 and also across 1 and 3.

I need a GS-911 or some sage advice. Help please.

Update with a possible solution. I shorted out wires #1 and 3 and bypassed the kickstand switch. I can ride it like this but I guess I have to get a new kickstand switch.

I think I have it figured out now. In order for you to put the bike into first gear, you have to have number one and number 3 closed and number one and number 2 open. One switch proves that the kickstand is not down and the other proves it is up. Why use one switch when you can use 2 and double your chances for failure? #-o

Well, I have a temporary fix; the question is should I make it permanent? I took a very thin wire and I shorted out number one and number 3 in the connector and then I jammed the connectors back together. Now the engine stays on when I shift into first gear with the kick stand up but it still shuts off when I put the side stand down. I only have one switch but that should be OK. Why would I need two?
